GISNY is looking for a Controller, who will be responsible for overseeing the financial management and administrative human resources operations of the organization.

This includes managing accounting records, accounts payable, financial planning and analysis, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. Additionally, the role involves leading the administrative side of the HR function such as payroll and benefit management.


The Controller works closely with the Treasurer of the Board of Trustees and the school leadership team and reports to the Business Manager.


JOB FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

Finance

  • Manage all accounts, ledgers and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP Standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain vendors' files, manage accounts payable reporting including preparing 1099 forms.
  • Oversee student billing and coordinate Smart Tuition with GISNY GL accounts monthly.
  • Maintain internal control for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures, including reconciliation of bank accounts and school credit cards.
  • Complete monthend and yearend close process
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner
  • Assist all department heads and faculty with tracking revenues/expenses for the departments and special projects.
  • Coordinate all audit activity and prepare annual Financial Reports
  • Prepare information for the filing of IRS 990 form.
  • Assist Business Manager in the annual budgeting and planning process as well as any necessary reporting and special projects.
  • Working with Parents' Association (PA) treasurer on tracking PA revenue/expenses
  • Manage organizational cash flow forecasting.
  • Develop and document accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
  • Manage fixed assets recording, depreciation determination and all related reporting.
  • Maintain compliance with local, state and federal government reporting requirements.

Human Resources

  • Manage payroll and all related reporting.
  • Administer benefit program including enrollment, claim resolution, change reporting and communication to employees.
  • Ensure timely and correct funding for employees' HSA and retirement accounts.
  • Prepare IRS form 5500 filing.
  • Issue employment letters for returning faculty and staff, onboard new faculty and staff as well as maintain staff personnel files.
  • Working with daytoday HR issues such as employment verifications, background checks, NYPFL and FMLA compliance, maternity leaves, COBRA letters, creditable coverage letters.
  • Assist Business Manager in development and implementation of personnel related policies and procedures.
  • Maintain compliance with federal and state regulations among others concerning hiring procedures, tax filings, payroll procedures, labor law and benefits requirements, ACA requirements and reporting.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S. or B.A. degree (preferably M.S. or M.A.) with emphasis on accounting or finance
  • Minimum ten years of experience in finance and human resources, preferably in nonprofit organizations
  • Multitasking capability, demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills, detail oriented
  • Very strong customer orientation and people skills
  • Ability to work independently and strong team player
  • Computer software literacy with Office 365, Financial Edge (Blackbaud) and Checkwriters knowledge preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Fluent English, German not required but would be an asset
