_This is a 100% Contract position for one year. This appointment may be extended or converted to career status based on the needs of the department._

DESCRIPTION:


As part of an elite public university, UC San Diego's Economics Department serves over 2300 majors and is consistently ranked in the global top 15.

Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced research professional with a full understanding of in-depth statistical analyses and / or research software programming techniques.

Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.


Specific areas of focus will be aimed at digitizing and quantifying various economic, political, social, and cultural aspects of indigenous societies in Africa.

Incumbent will be responsible for reading ethnographies and anthropological accounts of pre-colonial societies, building data sets from these qualitative accounts, developing text parsing tools to extract information about individual ethnic groups from long-form texts, and using geographic software to map and visualize data.

Incumbent will undertake empirical analyses working both quantitatively and qualitatively with aspects of societies and economic development.

Incumbent will oversee the day-to-day project management, collaborating with faculty members from other Universities in, but not limited to, the design and execution of empirical tests, and will be involved in all parts of the research, from data digitization to database management to mapping and visualization to model estimation to data analysis (using R and STATA) which involves writing code, understanding and interpreting the output, to the writing of estimation results.

This position also involves academic writing and editing (e.g., data documentation, grant proposals, and portions of journal articles), preparing information for presentation and publication.

QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Experience in economics research papers and research assistant (RA) work.
  • Experience with econometric techniques.
  • Knowledge of OLS, Logit, and IV estimators.
  • Knowledge of causal inference and methods to estimate standard errors; namely clustering, randomization inference, and Conley standard errors.
  • Knowledge of LaTeX and Beamer.
  • Proficiency in programming in Stata, R, and geographic software (e.g. ArcGIS).
  • Thorough knowledge of research function.
  • Thorough skills associated with statistical analysis and systems programming.
  • Thorough skills in analysis and consultation.
  • Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.
  • Skills in project management.
  • Research skills at a level to evaluate alternate solutions and develop recommendations.

PREFERRED:


  • Fluency in French.
  • Knowledge of Python.

Annual Full Pay Range:
$82,500 - $151,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)


Hourly Equivalent:
$ $72.56
