DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

This position is responsible for the training, orientation, and testing of all new and experienced school bus drivers and school bus attendants.

The work involves the management of all NYS DMV Article 19-A and NYSED records of the Transportation Department.

The work is performed under the supervision of the Transportation Director and/or Assistant Transportation Director, allowing leeway for the exercise of independent judgment.

The 19-A Examiner/Driver Trainer does related work as required.


TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
The duties listed are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed.

  • Trains or retrains new and experienced school bus drivers and provides detailed information to the Transportation Director, including recommendations for hiring;
  • Maintains NYS DMV Article 19A and NYSED school bus driver and school bus attendant files for all compliance records for all accidents, road tests, defensive driving, and safety courses;
  • Conducts all annual and biennial testing requirements of school bus drivers as required by NYS DMV and NYSED and reviews testing results with new and existing drivers;
  • Electronically submits all NYSED required files for drivers and attendants by their required due dates;
  • Schedules and participates in all safety refresher meetings and clinics to assist drivers who have been identified as needing help in correcting a deficiency in their driving or other workrelated activity;
  • Schedules and observes all NYSED required School Bus Safety Drills (three drills per school per year);
  • Schedules required fingerprinting of all new school bus drivers;
  • Observe drivers on routes, loading and unloading students at schools, parking at schools, parking in the transportation facility, or other areas as required;
  • Assist in resolving employee concerns and safety issues;
  • Assist in developing reports required from the Transportation Department;
  • Operates school buses in the absence of employees or in emergency situations;
  • Other duties as assigned by the by the Transportation Director and/or Assistant Transportation Director.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of safe driving practices, NYS DMV Article 19-A and NYSED Regulations, Vehicle and Traffic Laws related to school bus operation, and NYS DMV Commissioner's Regulations Part 6; Skills in operating school buses under all kinds of driving conditions; Ability or organize and conduct driver training and safety course for school bus drivers and attendants.


SPECIAL NOTES:


  • NYSED SBDI Certification is desired _or_ eligible to certify within 6 months of appointment.
  • Two (2) years' fulltime paid experience training school bus drivers is desired.
