    JOB TITLE: Academic Dean

    REPORTS TO: Vice President of Academics, Transfer, and Health Sciences

    DEPARTMENT: Academics

    EXEMPT: Yes

    GENERAL STATEMENT OF THE FUNCTION

    All Hinds Community College employees must commit to the Caring Campus approach to student engagement and daily apply these general behavioral objectives: listen to student questions and concerns with a positive attitude and make meaningful connections with students.

    The Academic Dean is campus based, serving the academic needs of the assigned campus(es) and the district. The Dean has responsibility for evaluating the educational needs of the campus and coordinating the provision of these services. Responsibilities of the Dean include faculty recruitment, supervision and evaluation, maintenance of academic standards, and program review and development. The Dean manages the area budget and assists in establishing priorities for the allocation of available resources. System-wide responsibilities include assisting in the development and implementation of college initiatives, policies and procedures, as well as managing his/her assigned pathway. The Dean reports to the Vice President for Academics, Transfer, and Health Sciences.

    Understanding of and commitment to the comprehensive community college mission. Ability to provide leadership in leading and implementing change. Ability to create and facilitate student-centered environments. Understanding of and ability to work with academic, developmental and transfer programs. Knowledge of contemporary and innovative methods of instructional delivery and curriculum development including the use of technology for instructional delivery. Experience in planning and budgeting. Ability to work as a team player in multi-cultural diverse working environment.

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

    Master's degree or higher;

    Five or more years teaching experience in a higher education setting

    Three or more years administrative experience in a higher education setting.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES, include the following.

    Other duties may be assigned.

    Maintain knowledge of diversity-related issues, legislation, and best practices.
    • Coordinating work with other Deans and the Vice President of Academics, Transfer, and Health Sciences.
    • Participating in developing and implementing of systemwide policies, procedures and objectives.
    • Developing annual goals for Academic Dean's office and approving annual goals for each academic department.
    • Collaborating, with the appropriate Department Chair and Vice President, to select qualified full-time and adjunct faculty.
    • Submitting timely reports in support of the College.
    • Keeping an updated inventory of equipment assigned to the Academic Dean's Office.
    • Serving on committees as assigned.
    Provides leadership to academic departments and programs of study by
    • Encouraging innovative, as well as traditional, instructional practices to meet the needs of students.
    • Collaborating in providing professional development activities for faculty and staff.
    • Participates in selection and retention of academic faculty and related support staff.
    • Supervising evaluation of academic instruction.
    • Reviewing and approving the development of the master class schedule for the appropriate campus(es).
    • Reviewing, approving, and implementing changes in the Academic Master Class Schedule for the appropriate campus(es) to adjust class size.
    • Reviewing, approving, and implementing new academic programs on the campus after determining priorities for such programs through need analysis, goal setting, and planning.
    • Preparing annual budget for academic dean's office.
    • Approving annual budgets for all academic departments on respective campus(es) and assigned pathway, as well as monitoring expenditures for each department in the academic area.
    • Assembling, reviewing, and approving all Academic Teaching agreements for Adjunct Faculty and Overloads for full-time faculty.
    • Assembling and maintaining all data necessary for an effective academic instructional program.
    • Developing procedures for and meeting with students to discuss academic problems and complaints.
    • Assigning clerical assistance, office, and classroom space to maximize the effective delivery of the academic programs
    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Assume general supervision and control of the professional activities of academic personnel and programs at appropriate location(s) and pathways.

    The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, and the employee is occasionally required to perform job responsibilities in the outdoors and off site.
