SUMMARY
The Instructional Assistant provides instruction and behavioral support services to youth attending the San Diego Center for Children Academy.

The Instructional Assistant supports students in the classroom; monitors and supervises students during lunch, supervises halls and bus loading zones and when youth are on the playground The Instructional Assistant works under the direction of a school professional educator who holds ultimate responsibility for the outcomes of the instructional program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES includes the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Be accountable to the classroom teacher.
  • Assist in creating a safe and positive learning environment for students with severe emotional and/or behavioral issues.
  • Work cooperatively with other staff to serve the needs of the student.
  • Become familiar with the direct instruction method of teaching.
  • Assist children in adhering to classroom schedule and assignments.
  • Lead or colead instructional groups as assigned by the teacher.
  • Implement reward and behavior management systems utilized in the classroom.
  • Monitor and chart behaviors.
  • Assist in classroom learning activities as assigned by teacher.
  • Tutor individual children in social and academic skills as directed by the teacher.
  • Assist in preparing curriculum and special project materials.
  • Monitor lunch, playground, and transportation areas as assigned by the teacher.
  • Attend staff meetings. Attend Treatment Team meetings when assigned by lead teacher.
  • Perform other duties assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Associates Degree or Minimum of 2 years experience related experience working with children with emotional/behavioral challenges
  • Valid California driver's license
  • Must pass Math and Writing assessment or proof of passing the CBEST (California Basic Educational Skills Test)
  • Experience with training and knowledge of behavior management strategies.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Child Development, Education, or related field
  • Standard first aid and CPR certification
  • SPA Certification (Safe and Positive Approaches)
  • Registered Behavior Therapist certification
