• Under the direct supervision of the Program Supervisor, the Private Swim Instructor teaches oneonone or small group instructional courses to participants ranging in age from infant to adult and oversees all aspects of safety regulations for aquatic participants.

• Instructs infants, children and /or adults using the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program
• Safeguards and regulates conduct of participants; enforces pool policies, rules, and regulations
• Provides excellent customer service to patrons
• Facilitate inclusion of all participants, including those with physical, emotional, behavioral, and/or developmental disabilities
• Maintains proper updated safety and training requirements
• Attends inservice training and meetings
• Complete course record forms for instructional documentation
• Provides guidance to instructor aides when appropriate
• Provides written reports on all accidents/incidents and forwards to Program Coordinator
• Ensures instructional pool supplies and equipment are put away after classes
• Operates equipment safely and reports any unsafe work conditions or practices to supervisor
• Other duties as assigned by Program Coordinator or Aquatics director

• Must be at least 16 years of age and pass a preemployment skills test
• Licenses and Certification
• American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or other swim instructor certification preferred
• CPR/AED and First Aid certifications required

• Knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of public recreation and leisure services
• Knowledge of the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program; preferred Water Safety Instructor or Water Safety Instructor Aide certification.
• Proficient in swimming and safety skills
• Knowledge of general principles in providing effective customer service
• Considerable knowledge of safety and liability management as it pertains to an aquatic facility
• Ability to create lesson plans based on the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program
• Ability to work independently and complete daily activities according to schedule
• Ability to motivate a diverse group of participants in an aquatic class setting.
• Knowledge and comprehension of community recreation as related to aquatics, including accepted standards, principles and concepts.
