BUILD, Inc. (Broader Urban Involvement and Leadership Development) is presently seeking a committed, self-motivated, and innovative individual to join our team. BUILD is a nationally respected gang intervention, violence prevention, and youth development organization based on Chicago's West Side. Since 1969, BUILD has worked to save lives and mentor young people who live in the city's most challenged neighborhoods. Campus Mentors provide 1:
1 and group mentoring services for youth during out-of-school time programming at BUILD's main campus. They facilitate daily drop-in programs and activities for special events as needed.

Campus Mentors help maintain a safe environment throughout the BUILD Campus, provide orientations for new clients, and help engage youth and community members in programming.

Campus Mentors assist with recruitment, ensure all registration paperwork is complete, and maintain strong relationships with parents/guardians to provide support and address challenges as needed.

Campus Mentors are part of the Enrichment Team.

They report directly to the Manager of High School and Community Programs with the support of the Director of Enrichment.

Key Responsibilities:


Youth Development:


  • Establish meaningful relationships with young people. Provide consistent support and coaching to help youth overcome challenges and achieve personal and professional goals.
  • Under the supervision of the Manager of High School + Community Programs, plan and facilitate daily recreational activities, educational workshops, activities for special events, civic engagement projects, and other experiential learning opportunities that promote positive youth development.
  • Work closely with BUILD's Enrichment Team and external partners to design experiences that allow youth to develop new skills, access resources, and build strong relationships with peers and supportive adults.

Program Operations:


  • Work closely with Campus Manager, Manager of High School + Community Programs, and other key staff to create and maintain a safe, youthfriendly environment at BUILD's main campus.
  • Facilitate orientation sessions for new participants and work with them to understand campus rules and regulations and register for programs.
  • Assist external partners with youth engagement and classroom management.
  • Supervise dropin activities and consistently enforce safety procedures throughout the building. Work quickly and responsibly to address interpersonal conflicts. Engage youth in collaborative problem solving and restorative justice practices, as needed.

Community Engagement:


  • Develop positive relationships and open communication channels with parent/guardians, school administrators, and other community partners to address attendance, behavior, or safety issues, as needed.
  • Develop strategic partnerships with youth, families, and other key stakeholders to recruit and enroll youth in programming.
  • Work with Enrichment Team to identify external partners who can fill gaps in programming.

Administrative:


  • Work with youth and families to successfully complete the intake and parental consent process.
  • Participate in program evaluation and data collection processes to ensure highquality service delivery.
  • Complete all required documentation in accordance with agency/programmatic policies and procedures.

Requirements:


  • Must be an excellent rolemodel, passionate about youth mentoring, and able to establish healthy relationships with young people.
  • Able to effectively communicate and build relationships with a wide variety of constituents including youth, parents, school staff and community partners.
  • Demonstrate commitment to working on a team and ability to engage in collaborative problem solving to meet the needs of a diverse community.
  • Skilled at conflict resolution and able to successfully intervene in challenging situations.
  • Familiar with restorative justice practices and traumainformed services.
  • Demonstrates energy, enthusiasm, and interest in supporting BUILD's mission.

Experience and Qualifications:


  • High School Diploma/GED +at least 3 years' experience working with youth required.
  • Bachelor's degree in education or related field + at least 2 years working with youth preferred.
  • Previous experience developing programs for youth impacted by community violence, poverty, and systemic racism.
  • Able to maintain a flexible schedule and work evening and weekend hours.
  • Demonstrate cultural competence as it relates to communitybased work.
  • Excellent written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills
