    KPBS serves the greater San Diego community with informative, cultural, entertaining and educational television, radio, and web programming. KPBS TV/FM is the public television and radio station for San Diego. Licensed to San Diego State University, KPBS supports and furthers the university's educational and community service mission by informing, enlightening and empowering its audience. It does so not only by presenting national and locally produced programming of value to its San Diego audience, but also by producing programming about San Diego and its people for distribution nationwide.

    The Planned Giving Officer's primary focus is to maintain and increase planned gifts for KPBS. The incumbent will identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospective and current planned giving donors. This position will create marketing campaigns around planned giving, as well as administer all planned gifts, working closely with the Finance Department, financial institutions, attorneys, and estate and tax planning professionals.

    The role will work closely with the Chief Development Officer to develop and enhance planned gift strategies, pipeline development, data analysis, reporting, and budget projections.

    Responsibilities

    The (Planned Giving Officer) is responsible for but not limited to:

    Planned Giving 90%
  • Implement and collaborate with the Development team to manage and grow all aspects of Planned Gifts at KPBS through marketing, face-to-face visits, outreach, events, tracking and projecting, gift administration, and development of the Planned Giving Advisory Committee. Legacy Giving to include KPBS Friends for Life, Bequests, Charitable Gift Annuities,Charitable Remainder Unitrusts/Lead Trusts, Trusts and Wills, and Endowment gifts.
  • Develop and grow an active planned giving donor/prospect portfolio of 100+ individuals.
  • Present planned gift opportunities such as bequests and life income gifts.
  • Serves as the point of contact for the Development team on complex gift planning vehicles.
  • Train and educate gift officers on estate gift procedures.
  • Navigate the technical aspects of planned giving vehicles and the relevant tax and estate consequences of these vehicles and how they can be used to enhance KPBS's fundraising efforts.
  • Responsible for the processing of stock gifts, facilitation of life insurance premiums and gifts, bequests, planned and life income gifts, in conjunction with the Development team.
  • Manage the marketing and development of the Planned Giving program, including membership strategy. Interview and write donor stories for the web page and newsletters, highlighting legacy gifts at KPBS. Create new ways to market planned gifts through mailed inserts, response cards, online strategies, on-air spots, event strategies, etc.
  • Oversee all stewardship of Friends for Life donors, including all administration of gifts, creating financial illustrations using Crescendo, budgeting, and tracking of planned giving trusts and gifts.
  • Manage the tracking of Building on Trust: The Campaign for KPBS planned giving donors.
  • Coordinate classes or seminars and events for planned giving donors and prospects. Events to include in-studio programs, presentations, group tours, guest lectures, luncheons, cultivation and appreciation events, and working committee activities.
  • Lead the Planned Giving Advisory Committee quarterly meetings. Serve as the point of contact to volunteer committee members, chairs, and outside parties in conjunction with events and committee meetings.
  • Manage a pool of individual Planned Giving prospects; cultivate, solicit and steward current or deferred gifts for those interested and/or identified as donors
  • Generate a database to track planned giving proposals.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Development Officer and Senior Director of Development in development strategy for KPBS Legacy Giving.
  • Attend and promote KPBS and donor opportunities at events for KPBS, Friends for Life, Producers Club, and major donors.
  • Delegate and coordinate daily clerical duties.

    Qualifications
    Knowledge and Abilities
  • Knowledge and thorough understanding of the technical aspects of all types of planned gifts, including bequests, life-income gifts, and gifts of insurance, real estate, and retirement assets.
  • Knowledge of the dynamics of fundraising and the concepts of development.
  • Demonstrated success managing and forging relationships with a wide range of donors.
  • Knowledge of and appreciation for the value of blended gifts.
  • Demonstrated skill in Microsoft Office, Crescendo, Raiser's Edge or other fundraising databases.
  • Demonstrated expertise in verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of KPBS's mission and commitment to fundraising.
  • Demonstrated work ethic, supported by commitment and follow-through.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and also independently.
  • Ability to adapt quickly and to plan for and manage multiple projects while working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to be organized, creative, proactive, detail-oriented, and have a strong ability to prioritize with superior time management and troubleshooting skills.

  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Must have a valid California Driver's license.
  • Minimum Education
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field, or additional experience may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.
  • Minimum Experience
  • Three years full-time professional experience in development work
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in development work with measurable results from employment in a non-profit organization with an annual budget in excess of $20 million.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience in complex planned giving vehicles.
  • Comprehensive fundraising experience
  • Applicable certificates or advanced degree in a related field
