Job Summary:


The Histotechnician will be responsible for performing all technical duties related to the production of histo-pathological slides and grossing tissue specimens.


Technical Responsibilities

  • Prepare slides for pathologist and external clients for interpretation
  • Perform routine and special microtomy procedures
  • Perform routine H&E stains, IHC and special stains
  • Perform routine tissue embedding
  • Perform Quality control of histology stains
  • Operate and maintain histology equipment not limited to tissue processors, and automated staining platform
  • Aid in troubleshoot and resolving inquiries or problems within the laboratory follow all technical standard operating procedures.

Administrative Responsibilities:


  • Record keeping
  • Ensures the Signout log is maintained daily and filed appropriately.
  • Maintains numeric data on lab test output.
  • Makes sure all reagents and solutions are properly dated and labeled.
  • Answers phone inquiries and take messages. Inventory Control
  • Ensures a consistent supply of reagents and consumables is always on hand.
  • Generates incident reports when appropriate.

Environment/Safety:


  • Responsible for the knowledge and practice of safety SOP's in the laboratory.
  • Complete all required EHS training
  • Wear appropriate PPE as required
  • Comply with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, LC EHS policies / procedures and the requirements of accrediting organizations
  • Conduct work in a safe and environmentally responsible manner

Information recorded on patient's requisition, worksheet or report is confidential and not to be discussed. This confidential information is supplied for the sole purpose of assisting the pathologist in making a diagnosis.

No person who obtains confidential information (i.e., HIV, TB, etc.) in the course of providing any health related services may disclose confidential information.


Personal Work Contacts:


  • Reports to the AP Supervisor.
  • Takes direction from the professional and medical staff.
  • Trains technicians and lab assistants assigned to the AP laboratory.
  • Interfaces with other laboratory and operational departments for specimen processing and other cooperative efforts.
  • Maintains a pleasant, cooperative and respectful relationship with coworkers and all staff.

Job Qualifications

  • Requirements; Associates of Science's degree with 13 years of experience in histology, or a graduate of an accredited Histotechnology school/program with a minimum of 1 year of experience, or a high school diploma with 5+ years of histology experience.
  • HT/HTL (ASCP) certification preferred.
  • State Personnel licensure (when applicable)
