    JOB SUMMARY

    Under the general supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, assist in scheduling, planning and managing the Lakewood Summer Camp; provide administrative support to recreation programs; supervise programs and special events.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES

    Assist the Recreation Coordinator in scheduling, planning and implementing Lakewood Outdoor Adventure Camp.

    Assess program needs, develop program curriculum, schedule and coordinate facility use, purchase or obtain supplies and equipment, and participate in on site activities.

    Plan, organize and coordinate a community recreation program for youth which includes outdoor education, cultural arts, physical activities, and special interest classes and programs.

    Monitor program participants, implement program policies and procedures, and evaluate program needs and successes.

    Lead groups in a variety of recreational activities, educational programs and projects such as arts and crafts, field trips, and sports; provide on-site supervision and instruction to participants.

    Supervise program staff, instructors and volunteers; schedule staff hours; coordinate and provide training; monitor and evaluate staff performance.

    Conduct informational meetings and trainings with staff to communicate policies, procedures, rules and regulations.

    Provide clerical support, answer phones, register participants, and respond to public inquiries for program and class information. Provide referrals when necessary.

    Provide information to recreation program instructors and participants regarding program schedules; explain registration requirements to the general public. Assist in promoting recreation activities in the community; deliver promotional materials to schools and other agencies throughout the city.

    Assist in monitoring and evaluating recreation programs; ensure the evaluation process for recreation programs is completed.

    Communicate with other City personnel to coordinate scheduling, facility use and related program arrangements.

    Maintain a variety of records and write periodic program reports. Maintain program equipment in good working order; ensure facility and grounds are kept neat, clean and litter free.

    Prepare recreational facilities for use; ensure that appropriate equipment is available for classes and events; set up and take down tables, other furniture and equipment.

    Perform routine custodial work such as sweeping, mopping, cleaning hard surfaces and wiping up spills.

    Monitor recreational activities; ensure activities are safe and appropriate.

    Transport program participants in a safe and efficient manner according to City policy. Maintain attendance reports, activity logs, incident/accident reports and related records.

    Supervise part-time, seasonal and/or volunteer recreation staff and oversee special interest instructors.

    Assist in the recruitment and selection of staff.

    Order program materials and supplies.

    Operate office equipment including computers, copiers, fax machines and telephones to perform administrative tasks.

    Provide first aid in case of minor injury.

    Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.

    Actively champion a culture of and commitment to workplace safety through everyday actions and leadership.

    Perform other duties as assigned.
    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

    Any combination equivalent to: high school graduation and two years community based recreation program experience.

    Valid Washington driver's license; must obtain valid first aid and CPR certification.

    Work evenings, weekends, holidays and special events as required.

    KNOWLEDGE OF:
    General rules, practices and terminology of recreational activities.

    Requirements of maintaining a recreational facility in a safe, clean and orderly condition.

    Proper methods of setting up and storing furniture, equipment, materials and supplies.

    Methods, equipment and materials used in general custodial work.

    Recreation philosophy; practices and techniques related to recreation programs and activities.

    Oral and written communications. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, courtesy and respect.

    Diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of the community's citizens.

    Current child development theory and practices. Operations, services and activities of a comprehensive municipal recreation program.

    Principles and practices of recreation program development and implementation.
    Principles, methods and techniques of instruction.

    Methods and techniques of planning, organizing, and supervising recreation activities.

    A wide variety of recreation facilities, including daily operations and equipment.
    Record keeping techniques.

    Modern office procedures, methods and equipment including computers and software.

    ABILITY TO:

    Plan, coordinate, develop, and implement classes and activities for the participation of the City's populations and surrounding service area.

    Drive 12 passenger recreation van.

    Plan, schedule and monitor programs effectively.

    Plan and organize work. Supervise program staff, instructors and volunteers; schedule staff hours; coordinate and provide training; monitor and evaluate staff performance.

    Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, user populations, parents, and instructors.

    Establish and maintain safe recreational environments.

    Communicate effectively with staff and the general public about the City's recreation program.

    Work with people of all ages. Lead a variety of youth recreational activities.

    Perform custodial and light maintenance duties.

    Respond effectively to emergency situations and apply basic first aid.

    Work evenings, weekends, holidays and special events as required.

    ENVIRONMENT:

    Work is performed in an office environment; an indoor/outdoor recreational environment subject to noise, distractions, seasonal heat and adverse weather conditions; and travel from site to site.

    PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

    Sight, speaking, hearing, sitting or standing for extended periods of time, moderate lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds, pushing or pulling, throwing objects to demonstrate/participate in activities, reaching overhead and horizontally, and dexterity of hands and fingers to operate sports equipment and a computer keyboard.

    Paid interns shall receive holiday pay. Employees in grant funded positions are eligible for paid holidays if specified in the grant.

    Temporary and seasonal employees are not eligible for any other benefits except those mandated by law, such as paid sick leave, workers' compensation, and unemployment coverage.
