    The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $75,000 - $80,000/yr.

    Full Salary Range:
    The full salary range for this position is $67,200 - $119,600/yr.

    Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University.

    Work Location: 2120 Student Resource Building

    Monday- Friday 8am-5pm

    Brief Summary of Job Duties


    Under the general direction of the Director of Disabled Students, the Disability Specialist independently responds, provides services and follow-up to students with Learning Disabilities.

    Ensures appropriate academic accommodations are provided, counsels and advises students regarding disability management, analyzes their need for mental health resources, and responds to students in crisis states.

    Ensures compliance with federal laws, state regulations, and campus/UC-wide guidelines on services and equal access for students with disabilities. Coordinates the following grant-supported programs: DSP Peer Mentoring and assists with RISE Initiatives Program. May perform other divisional project support duties as assigned. Work is performed with a high level of independence under the general direction of the DSP Associate Director. Independently prioritizes and completes on-going tasks following established departmental guidelines, University policies and State/Federal laws. Other assignments are made by the Associate Director on a project basis.

    Work is reviewed periodically with the Associate Director through status reports and individual meetings and when actions necessitate a deviation from standard guidelines.

    Masters Degree

    1-3 Years relevant experience


    Experienced professional who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field; independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; possesses broad job knowledge; analyzes problems/issues of diverse scope and determines solutions.

    Background in disabilities or special education. Specialized knowledge of disability related assessments including AD/HD and learning disability testing.

    Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff and faculty.

    Ability to address student's disability related difficulties, and provide support services.

    Job Functions and Percentages of Time:


    Counsel and Advise Students (40%): Determine students' academic and disability-related difficulties by interpreting diagnostic tests and/or psycho-educational evaluations for students with Learning Disabilities (LD), Attention-Deficit/Hyper Activity Disorder (ADHD), and Psychological disabilities.

    Offers guidance and instruction regarding compensatory strategies and techniques to ensure students' access to the academic environment for students with LD, ADHD, and Psychological Disabilities.

    Provide counseling and advising to students regarding the impact of disabling conditions, strategies to compensate for disability, and additional care needed, i.e., counseling, medical care, psychiatric treatment, to maximize success and manage disability.

    Coordinate off-campus counseling and other assistance for DSP students with Learning Disabilities (LD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD), and Psychological Disabilities.

    Maintain current community resource list relevant to students with LD, ADHD, and psychological disabilities, including treatment options, educational opportunities, supports, and services.

    Respond to students in a crisis state. Based on behavior and symptoms, determine the appropriate course of action. Advise and refer students appropriate campus resources.


    Interpret Documentation, Determine Accommodations (30%): Responsible for interpreting documentation (neurological reports, psychological/educational assessments), from physicians, educational therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists, for students with LD, ADHD, and Psychological disability.

    Coordinate with DSP Staff, Faculty, Teaching Assistants, and departmental representatives to ensure students' appropriate accommodations and equal access. Stay current on general aspects of Adaptive Technology Center (ATC) and specialized software. Refer DSP students to ATC as appropriate. Maintain networks with Disabilities Specialists at other UC campuses by participating in regular conference calls.

    Serve on UC-wide committees to develop, evaluate, and revise Guidelines for assessment and documentation of students with AD/HD and Psychological Disabilities.


    Consult and Advocacy (20%): Make recommendations to undergraduate and graduate Deans in the College of Letters and Sciences, College of Engineering, and College of Creative Studies regarding appropriate academic adjustments for students based on disability, i.e., deficit course load, time-to-degree, and role of disability in academic difficulties.

    Consult with ADA Compliance Coordinator, representatives from Housing and Residential Services, Dean of Students Office, and community and campus mental health professionals to determine appropriate accommodations, course of action for students with Psychological disabilities whose symptoms are worsening.

    Explain to faculty, teaching assistants, parents, and university staff what information is needed to document disabilities and how academic accommodations are determined.

    Provide consultations to UCSB staff and faculty who encounter students displaying behaviors, which may indicate a psychological disability.

    Program Development and Education (10%): Development, implement, and evaluate specific programs to support students, i.e. Support Groups, Peer-mentor Program. Address campus-wide needs and concerns of students with LD, ADHD, and Psychological Disabilities by serving on interdepartmental committees/organizations. Establish University procedures for determining appropriate accommodations for students with LD, ADHD, and Psychological disabilities.

    Educate the campus community regarding DSP, procedures for ensuring equal access, and disability-related issues, through annual departmental training, presentations, and consultations.

    Coordinate annual New Student Orientation with other Disability Specialists for all incoming students on caseload.
