Description
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the VP, Organ and Tissue Donation, is responsible for the overall medical operations of the OPO and for medical quality assurance of OPO activities.
Is primarily accountable for the surgical recovery process:
surgical dissection, removal, and preparation of selected donor organs for transplantation in the operative setting.
It is the responsibility of this incumbent to assist in efforts to increase the availability of organs for transplantation and research by providing high-quality recovery services and clinical oversight within Versiti's donation service area.
The Medical Director/Recovery Surgeon also oversees organ donor referral screening and medical management of organ donors.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Surgically recovers abdominal (liver, kidney, pancreas) organs for transplantation and research in donor hospitals throughout the service area
Assumes on-call coverage, including weekends, nights, and holidays, as required to assure adequate coverage for donor activity and must be available to surgically recover organs at the specified time
Ensures compliance with CMS and OPTN regulations and/or other medical/legal requirements
Provides education and training to OPO staff and hospital personnel involved in the donation process
Serves as an advisor between the organization, hospital staff, and transplant centers when organ procurement is in progress
Proactively develops relationships and works collaboratively with transplant centers, surgeons, and donor hospital staff to optimize donation outcomes and completes any necessary follow-up post donation cases
Supports the Organ Recovery Services team with kidney perfusion, oversight of potential future organ perfusion innovation including liver pumps and normothermic regional perfusion
Represents OPO/TB at national societies and conferences such as AOPO, AATB, ASTS, and OPTN meetings
Responsible for the development, implementation and education of the OPO's protocols for referral and donor evaluation, management, organ recovery/preservation and placement
Leads the OPO's Medical Advisory Committee
In collaboration with the VP, Organ and Tissue Donation ensures that the program activities are consistent with and satisfy the requirements of tissue processors
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
D. or D.O. degree
Completion of an abdominal transplant fellowship or significant surgical experience in kidney, liver, and pancreas procurement and transplantation and critical care
License to practice medicine in Wisconsin
EXPERIENCE
3 years' experience in organ donation and transplantation
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Transplant surgeon preferred
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Ability to cope with high levels of stress and handle a heavy workload
Must have an interest in and knowledge of organ donation and transplantation
Strong interpersonal skills
Good communication skills, ability to use and be understood in English
Familiarity with state, federal and national regulations and standards as they apply to organ recovery (i.e. OPTN-Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network, CMS-Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, ASTS-American Society of Transplant Surgeons)
Demonstrated leadership skills to include team building, problem solving, decision making, conflict resolution, and organizational abilities
Proficient in computer applications necessary for position, including Microsoft Office
Valid driver's license and access to insured vehicle required
