    General Definition of Work

    The City of Gastonia is seeking an enthusiastic, qualified individual for the role of Human Resources Technician.

    The responsibilities of the role require performing difficult, skilled administrative support work in the implementation and management of employee records, including insurance, benefits, and personal actions.

    The Human Resources Technician may be assigned to special projects and/or programs as needed and will be responsible for verifying and imputing data into the HRIS.

    Additional work may be assigned as required. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Director of Human Resources.

    Essential Functions/Duties

    • Assists with the orderly receipt, verification, entry and filing of information sent to Human Resources for processing (specific to the HRIS)
    • Maintains personnel files, ensuring the confidentiality and integrity of employee information
    • Responsible for projects/programs as assigned, such as the administration of the performance evaluation system, total compensation statements, and regulatory reports like the EEO4
    • Gathers information for reports and presentations and assists with preparation of various written, statistical, and narrative reports of activities to support actions, or recommendations, or provide information
    • Performs surveys with other entities regarding matters related to Human Resources and responds to surveys from other organizations as assigned.
    • Assists other member of HR as needed
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


    • Some knowledge offederal, state, and local laws governing employment practices, including but not limited to EEOC, ADA, FMLA, FLSA, and Title VII
    • Someknowledge of human resources principles, practices, and procedures related to recruitment, onboarding, benefits administration, employee relations, and compliance
    • Familiarity with Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) and proficiency in data entry, record-keeping, and report generation
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with employees, managers, and external stakeholders
    • Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships, resolve conflicts, and maintain a positive work environment
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritize work, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
    • Keen attention to detail and accuracy in data entry, record-keeping, and documentation
    • Analytical skills to identify issues, evaluate alternatives, and propose solutions to HR-related problems
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive employee information with discretion and professionalism
    • Commitment to providing excellent customer service to employees, responding promptly to inquiries, and addressing concerns effectively
    • Flexibility and adaptability to navigate changing priorities, procedures, and organizational needs
    • Collaboration skills to work effectively as part of a team, supporting colleagues and contributing to the overall success of the Human Resources department
    • Proficiency with computer applications such as Word and Excel

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    Minimally qualified starting pay:
    $ hr.


    • Graduation from an accredited college with an Associate's degree in human resources, or related field with considerable experience in computer applications and administrative support
    • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Valid driver's license
    • NIMS IS-00700 completion within twelve months of hire

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    The physical activity of this position includes:

    • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.
    • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
    • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal spoken word levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discriminations in sound, such as when making fine adjustments on machined parts.
    • Repetitive Motions: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
    • The physical requirements of this position
    • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Office Environment Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
    • The visual acuity requirements, including color, depth perception and field of vision
    • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform one or more of the following: preparing and analyzing data and figures; accounting; transcription; computer terminal; extensive reading;
