    Description

    As a Substation Protection and Controls Engineer, you will have a key role in designing, analyzing, and implementing protection and control systems for high-voltage substations. Your expertise is vital for ensuring the safety and efficiency of substation equipment, safeguarding critical assets, and improving the overall reliability of our electrical infrastructure.


    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Protection System Design: Develop detailed protection schemes for high-voltage substations, including relay settings, fault studies, coordination, and scheme logic, to ensure equipment and personnel safety from electrical faults.
    • Control System Engineering: Design and implement control systems for substation equipment to guarantee seamless operation within the broader power grid.
    • Commissioning and Testing: Collaborate with the commissioning and testing lead on projects for protection and control systems to validate their performance and compliance with industry standards.
    • Fault Analysis: Conduct fault studies and simulations to evaluate protection system responses during various fault scenarios, identifying vulnerabilities and suggesting enhancements.
    • Relay Configuration: Program and configure protective relays and control devices for accurate and reliable responses to abnormal system conditions.
    • Substation Automation: Integrate intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) and automation systems into substation design to enhance operational efficiency and remote monitoring capabilities.
    • Regulatory Compliance: Stay updated on relevant industry standards, such as NERC, IEEE, and IEC, to ensure alignment of protection and control designs with regulations.
    • Project Coordination: Work with diverse teams, including substation engineers, project managers, and technicians, to deliver complete protection and control solutions within utility projects.
    • Troubleshooting and Support: Offer technical support during substation operations, maintenance, and troubleshooting, aiding in resolving complex issues.
    • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to enhance protection and control system designs, optimize settings, and implement best practices for improved system reliability and performance.

    EDUCATION & MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; Master's degree is advantageous.
    • 3-5 years of experience in substation protection and controls engineering, focusing on high-voltage applications.
    • Thorough understanding of protective relays, IEDs, control schemes, and communication protocols in substations.
    • Familiarity with power system protection practices, fault analysis, and coordination principles.
    • Proficiency in relevant software tools for protection and control system design, simulation, and configuration.
    • Knowledge of substation automation concepts and SCADA systems integration.
    • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work efficiently in a team environment.
    • Excellent communication skills to explain technical concepts to audiences with varying technical knowledge.
    • P.E. (Professional Engineer) license or equivalent certification is a plus.
    • Willingness to travel to project sites when required.
