Summary / Objective
Sets up, maintains, and operates machines such as lathes, borers, millers, grinders, presses, drills, or other machines to make parts


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Feed raw material or parts to semiautomated machines
  • Studies blueprints, sketches, machine parts or specifications to determine type and dimensions of metal stock required.
  • Measures, marks, and scribes' dimensions and reference points on metal stock surfaces.
  • Inspect work pieces for defects, and measure work pieces to determine accuracy of machine operation, using rules, templates, or other measuring instruments.
  • Read blueprints or job orders to determine product specifications and tooling instructions and to plan operational sequences.
  • Replaces defective part with new part or repairs or reproduces part from various kinds of metal stock. Maintains and lubricates machine tools and equipment.
  • Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
  • Observes and listens to operating machines or equipment to diagnose machine malfunction and determine need for adjustment or repair.

Education and/or Experience


High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
