Building Caring Families Community Organizer Internship 100 Remote - Washington - Voice Up Publishing Incorporated
Description
# Building Caring Families Community Organizer Internship## Position Overview
The Building Caring Families Community Organizer Internship provides hands-on experience in grassroots community organizing focused on strengthening family support networks through authentic conversation and resource connection.
Interns work directly with Regional Directors and community coordinators to learn relationship-building skills, community organizing strategies, and sustainable approaches to family support while contributing to real initiatives that prevent family crises before they occur.
## About Building Caring Families
Building Caring Families operates as a collaborative community initiative that transforms neighborhoods through one-on-one conversations rooted in comfort and care.
Rather than waiting for families to reach crisis points, we focus on building preventive support networks that address critical challenges including healthcare access, mental health, housing stability, food security, financial empowerment, education, employment, community safety, and civic engagement.
## Core Mission
Our approach centers on the principle that people who have received comfort and support are uniquely positioned to extend that same care to others facing similar challenges.
Interns learn to facilitate authentic conversations that connect families with resources while building lasting community relationships that strengthen entire neighborhoods.
## Internship Structure### Week 1-2: Foundation Building
### Community Engagement (Primary Focus)
### Community Organizing Skills
Develop proficiency in facilitating conversations that build trust and identify authentic community needs. Learn to navigate power dynamics and cultural differences while building genuine relationships across diverse backgrounds. Practice group facilitation, meeting management, and conflict resolution techniques essential for sustainable community development.
### Professional Development
Gain practical experience in nonprofit organizational structures and community-based program management. Develop cultural competency skills for working effectively across different economic, ethnic, and social contexts. Learn documentation and evaluation methods specific to relationship-based community interventions.
### Personal and Leadership Growth
Clarify personal values and sense of purpose related to community service and social justice. Develop patience with community development timelines and comfort with ambiguous situations. Strengthen ability to support others without attempting to solve their problems, learning appropriate boundaries between empathy and action.
## Supervision and Mentorship
### Regional Director Oversight
Weekly one-on-one supervision meetings focused on skill development, ethical questions, and professional growth. Monthly evaluation sessions to assess progress toward learning goals and adjust responsibilities accordingly. Access to Regional Director for consultation on complex community situations or challenging conversations.
### Community Coordinator Partnership
Daily check-ins during active community organizing periods with experienced local coordinators. Joint reflection sessions on community dynamics, effective relationship-building strategies, and cultural adaptation of program approaches. Collaborative planning for community events and response to emerging family needs.
### Peer Learning Network
Bi-weekly virtual meetings with other Building Caring Families interns from different regions. Shared problem-solving sessions on common challenges in community organizing and family support. Group presentations on successful strategies and lessons learned from diverse community contexts.
## Impact and Evaluation
Interns contribute to measurable community outcomes including increased family resource connections, stronger neighborhood relationships, and enhanced collaboration between formal services and informal community support.
Success is evaluated through community feedback, relationship development quality, and demonstration of key community organizing competencies rather than quantitative metrics alone.
## Eligibility Requirements### Academic Background
Current enrollment in social work, public health, community development, sociology, psychology, nonprofit management, or related fields. Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to work respectfully across cultural and economic differences. Reliable transportation and flexibility for evening and weekend community events.
### Personal Qualities
Genuine interest in family wellbeing and community empowerment. Demonstrated ability to listen without judgment and maintain appropriate boundaries in challenging situations. Cultural humility and willingness to learn from community members rather than imposing external solutions. Patience with slow community development processes and comfort with uncertain outcomes.
### Practical Capabilities
Basic organizational skills for managing multiple community relationships and documentation requirements. Ability to work independently while maintaining regular communication with supervisors. Comfort with minimal structure and self-directed learning opportunities. Flexibility to adapt approaches based on community feedback and changing circumstances.
## Application Process
### Required Materials
Submit resume highlighting relevant community engagement experience, personal statement explaining motivation for family-focused community work, and two references from community involvement, academic, or professional supervisors.
Complete Voice Up foundational assessment and planning survey demonstrating understanding of community organizing principles.### Selection Process
Initial application review followed by phone interview with Regional Director. In-person or virtual interview with local community coordinators to assess fit with community context. Reference checks focused on community relationship building and collaborative work style. Background screening appropriate for work with vulnerable populations.
## Participation Options
### Universal Starting Point
All participants begin as volunteers for the first 30-45 days to establish genuine commitment to Building Caring Families mission and develop foundational community organizing skills.
During this period, interns attend virtual weekend meetings, complete weekly mentor check-ins, and identify their specific area of interest within family support work.
### Advancement PathwaysVolunteer Track Continuation
Ongoing flexible participation ideal for those balancing other commitments while building valuable leadership experience and expanding professional networks in community development and family services.
Academic Credit Track
Structured internship experience designed to meet university requirements for course credit. We coordinate directly with academic institutions to ensure proper documentation, evaluation, and alignment with educational guidelines for internship completion.
Paid Fellowship Track
Selected candidates with exceptional project proposals may receive monthly stipends of $350-$750 through partnerships between Voice Up and community sponsors.
Requires 3-4 month commitment to specific community organizing project with measurable outcomes.### Long-term Growth Opportunities
Independent Contractor Positions
After demonstrating consistency through planning phases and community engagement, participants become eligible for compensation ranging $17-$35 per hour as independent contractors for 6-12 month periods, maximum 15 hours per week per academic semester.
Incubator Program Eligibility
Outstanding participants may apply for up to $10,000 seed investment for innovative community organizing projects, determined case-by-case through detailed written proposals and direct consultation with organizational leadership.
All participation options include 100% remote coordination with flexible scheduling, full mentorship and leadership development, and no minimum semester requirements, ensuring accessibility for diverse participants while maintaining program quality and community impact.
