The Town of Falmouth is seeking a full-time Forestry/Tree Care Crew Leader for the Parks Division of our DPW to lead the care and operational maintenance of all Town-owned trees.

This position works 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday from 7 am to 3:30 pm, with substantial overtime opportunities.

The Forestry/Tree Care Crew Leader performs a variety of arboricultural work to manage the Town's urban forest, open spaces, and rights-of-way under the general direction of the Parks Superintendent/Tree Warden, but without direct supervision.

This position supervises one or more crews of skilled and/or unskilled workers engaged in tree maintenance or skilled tasks for other DPW divisions and Town departments as assigned.

The Town prioritizes safety, and an important function of this position is responsibility for daily worksite safety.

The Forestry/Tree Care Crew Leader trains the crews on appropriate safety measures, sets up worksite safety zones, and ensures that safety policies and procedures are followed.


This position identifies tree-related situations in need of attention, determines the appropriate methods and techniques needed to address them, performs that work, and/or leads a crew to complete that work.

Examples include necessary trimming, pruning, and felling to eliminate hazards and preserve the beauty of trees on streets, in parks, or on other public property and performing tree surgery.

A variety of equipment is used to accomplish this work:

hydraulic truck-mounted bucket hoists, spraying equipment, chain saws, woodchippers, stump grinders, aerial equipment near electrical lines, and other tools and equipment pertinent to forestry and pest control.


The Forestry/Tree Care Crew Leader responds to after-hours emergencies on an overtime basis and operates vehicles and equipment for snow and ice control work as required.

He/she may plow, sand, and de-ice roads, sidewalks, schools, parking areas, and other facilities during the regularly scheduled shift as required or as an overtime opportunity.

This position also works and leads the crews on non-tree-related Public Works construction and maintenance projects as needed.


Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent with additional coursework in arboriculture or a related field preferred and three years of experience in public works construction and maintenance projects, specifically in tree maintenance, tree treatment methods, and tree climbing, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.


Must have a working knowledge of planting, maintenance, and removal of trees or related shade tree work, including the operation of related maintenance equipment such as aerial lift vehicles.

Must possess or have the ability to obtain the following licenses/certifications within 6 months of being hired:

MA Class A CDL with air brakes endorsement, 2A Hoisting Engineer License, Pesticide Applicator's License, OSHA-10 certification, and Electrical Hazards Awareness Program certification.

Supervisory experience preferred.

Wage:
$28.55/hour - $36.42/hour, commensurate with qualifications and experience, with a new wage scale effective 7/1/24 to be published shortly. Comprehensive benefits and overtime opportunities.
