    Director of EducationThe Education Director ensures NGS is a genealogy and family history education leader and manages NGS's education department.

    Working closely with the Executive Director and a team of staff and contractors, the Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving courses and programs that cater to the educational needs of a diverse range of adult learners nationwide, from beginners to advanced researchers.

    The Director ensures the continued growth of the Society's education programs.
    The Director manages course development and updates, as well as instructor selection.

    The Director studies, analyzes, and reports on competition, pricing, and programs relating to the study of genealogy and family history.

    The Director assists with education program marketing, including attending events as necessary.

    The Director supervises two part-time staff members (the Education Course Manager and the Course Coordinator) and manages all education department contractors.

    In addition, the Director provides advice and guidance to the GRIP Genealogy Institute's contracted management on curriculum development and coordinator- and instructor-related issues.

    The Director also recruits and manages volunteers as necessary.

    The Director chairs the Society's Education Committee, participates in the Marketing and Communications (Marcom) Team, and assists with the development of the conference program.

    The incumbent reports to the Executive Director and works closely with board members and others to fulfill the mission of the Society and pursue its ethical purpose.

    Essential Job Functions1.

    Strategic and Program Planning· Work closely with the Executive Director and board to develop a strategic vision and direction for the Society's education programs.· Develop and implement a plan to deliver high-quality educational programs aligned with the Society's mission, vision, and strategy.· Integrate educational strategies into the Society's goals.· Develops and executes annual budgets for the education department.2.

    Curriculum Development and Management· Design and develop comprehensive educational curricula and courses, focusing on various aspects of genealogy and family history, including genealogical records and research methodologies.· Propose courses to meet the educational needs of genealogists and family historians, from beginner to advanced.· Select course developers who possess subject matter expertise.· Manage course development and periodic course updates.· Evaluate course materials to ensure they are substantive and meet genealogical standards and DEI objectives.· Evaluate and update existing courses to ensure relevance and adherence to genealogy standards.3.

    Instructor Management and Development· Recruit and manage a diverse team of instructors and subject matter experts.4.

    Program Administration· Oversee the administration of all educational programs.· Supervise all education program staff and contractors, including the course coordinator, education course manager, and AI program director.· Supervise the GRIP Genealogy Institute management team in areas related to curriculum, course coordinators, and instructors.

    Help develop a high-quality institute program both online and in-person. The Executive Director supervises GRIP operations.5.

    Outreach and Collaboration· Collaborate with genealogical societies, libraries, and other related organizations to enhance educational opportunities.· Engage with the genealogical community to identify educational needs and trends.6.

    Market Analysis· Study the educational needs of genealogists and conduct market analysis.· Study, analyze, and report on competition, pricing, and programs relating to genealogy education.7.

    Marketing NGS Courses· Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications Team to create and implement marketing plans that promote education department sales.8.

    Other duties as assigned by the Executive DirectorRequirementsKnowledge and Skill Set Requirements· Bachelor's degree required with 7-10 years of genealogy research experience.· Professional experience in leading and inspiring a diverse team of other professionals, contractors, and volunteers.· Experience in a nonprofit or academic setting is valued.· Extensive experience in genealogical curriculum development, including experience developing courses for genealogy institutes or higher education.

    · Thorough knowledge of genealogical research methods, standards, documentation, and reporting.· Solid understanding of adult learning and the genealogical education marketplace.

    · Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

    · Strong verbal and writing skills and can demonstrate knowledge of the Genealogical Proof Standard.· Excellent fiscal management skills.· An advanced understanding of and ability to use technology including Microsoft Office, Gmail, Canvas learning management system, and cloud-based programs such as Box, Dropbox, and Zoom.· A creative and innovative mindset.

    Physical RequirementsMost work is performed on a personal computer, sitting at a desk for long periods throughout the day. Although this position requires minimal lifting, one must be able to lift boxes of materials for events when necessary. Travel to the NGS conference and RootsTech is required; other travel depends on needs and budget. Evening and weekend work is occasionally required, particularly during NGS events and RootsTech. Standing for long periods and walking at meetings are required. Ability to remain professional in stressful situations.
    Please note that the Society has a COVID-19 vaccination policy, which requires that all employees be fully vaccinated.
    Work EnvironmentFast-paced, professional environment with moderate noise levels. Must be able to use a computer at a workstation for long periods and to accommodate potentially frequent interruptions. Travel requirements equate to approximately two weeks per year, with additional travel possible dependent on needs and budget. Most staff work remotely, but a desk at the NGS office is available when needed. We operate in a Google environment and use Zoom regularly for meetings.
    The position is part-time at 62 percent or 1300 hours annually.
