The UNC Kidney Center's (UNCKC) mission is to reduce the burden of chronic kidney disease through discovery about the pathophysiology and therapeutics of kidney disease and through the development and assessment of educational programs about kidney disease for North Carolinians and their primary care physicians.

The UNCKC's Kidney Education Outreach Program (KEOP) promotes citizens' increased awareness of personal risk factors for kidney disease and increased knowledge about how the kidneys function.

Four research laboratories are funded through a variety of external sources, including NIH Program Project (PO1), T32, U01 and K23 awards.

Epidemiologic and clinical research in such areas as focal segmental glomerular sclerosis (FSGS), ADPKD, ANCA and Lupus vasculitis, Literacy and health outcomes is funded through NIH, foundations, private donors and corporate grants.

Position Summary

This position will assist in the daily operations of the clinical research biospecimen repository within the UNC Kidney Center.

This position will facilitate the use of and improve the quality of stored biospecimens and data derived from multiple research studies using the biospecimens.

The primary purpose of this position is to processand manage, pristine biological samples from patients entering one of the UNC Kidney Center's study cohorts.

The individual will work in a collaborative network composed of physicians, PhDs, nurses, research personnel, and patients.

Once a patient is consented and samples are obtained, the research specialist is in charge of processing samples, performing experiments as needed, and ensuring proper storage and long term management.

. Hands on processing of each blood sample is required. Sample processing requires DNA isolation and RNA isolation, serum separation, isolation of PBMCs and/or immune cells and storage. The position requires ordering, inventorying and maintaining all equipment needed for preparing, organizing, and storing reagents for sample processing. All requirements for laboratory safety in handling blood borne pathogens must be kept current.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

The candidate must be proficient at multi-tasking and have the ability to work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. The candidate must have experience managing inventory systems and the ability to develop and assist with operational improvements.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Education in human biological science, chemistry, education, or health related field. Experience in a

clinical/research laboratory, and experience performing complex experiments and assays on human biologic samples.

Required Licenses/Certifications Special Physical/Mental Requirements

Requires the ability to stand or work at a research bench for hours at a time.
