Description

BASIC FUNCTION:


Plan and performs a wide variety of skilled and semi-skilled carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical, heating and other building maintenance and repair tasks necessary to maintain facilities in a safe and satisfactory condition; performs a variety of custodial duties and associated recordkeeping necessary to support daily operation in a clean, orderly and secure condition.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Under the supervision of the School Site Administrator or Designee. No supervisorial duties exercised.


REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
May include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform routine custodial services at school facilities.
  • Maintain the interior and exterior of buildings, including painting, repairs on plumbing, electrical/lighting and heating systems, and repairs flooring, sheetrock and other hard and soft surfaces.
  • Receive, prioritize and respond to electronic work orders for repairs and maintenance from site staff; consult with Site Administrator to evaluate work needed; plan and organize work to be done.
  • Perform light gardening, to include mowing, trimming, weeding, planting and fertilizing as needed.
  • Survey buildings and grounds for hazards and report findings to supervisor.
  • Utilize electronic work order system to keep a work log, noting supplies used and date work performed/completed.
  • Arrange and serve as point person for contract/outside service providers to ensure contracts are being met and quotations are provided for repairs and/or additional services.
  • Order supplies and maintain inventory of supplies for routine building operations and maintenance.
  • Operate a variety of maintenance and custodial equipment and tools.
  • Perform other duties as assigned that support the overall objectives of the position.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
KNOWLEDGE;

  • Methods of maintaining school facilities in a clean and sanitary condition.
  • Methods, materials, equipment and tools used in the various custodial, building and grounds maintenance specialties.
  • Methods and techniques of electrical repairs, carpentry, plumbing, painting, mechanical work, heating and air conditioning maintenance, and gardening.
  • Use and maintenance of a variety of power and hand tools.
  • Work scheduling methods and techniques.
  • Safe work methods and practices, including proper lifting techniques.
  • Proper methods for storing equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Cleaning methods, including basic methods of cleaning and preserving floors, whiteboards, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures.
  • Maintenance and repair of equipment and tools used in the various custodial, building and grounds maintenance specialties.
  • Basic grounds maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, raking and weeding.
SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Work and communicate positively with staff, students, and the public.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Perform a variety of skilled and semiskilled carpentry, mechanical, plumbing and electrical maintenance work.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in clean working order.
  • Skillfully use and maintain equipment and tools involved in assigned tasks.
  • Lift and move furniture and equipment utilizing proper physical safety measures.
  • Maintain classrooms, offices and other school facilities in a clean, safe and secure condition according to established guildelines.
  • Access and properly document electronic work orders.
  • Observe and report safety hazards and need for maintenance and repair.
  • Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities
  • Meet the physical requirements necessary to perform assigned duties safely and effectively, including lifting sixty (60) pounds on an occasional basis and in excess of sixty (60) pounds with assistance

LICENSE AND VEHICLE REQUIRED:

  • A valid and appropriate California driver's license. Appropriately insured vehicle needed in order to travel from site to site with mileage reimbursed
  • May be required to possess, or obtain, a valid asbestos maintenance and operation certificate as required by the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

ENVIRONMENT:


Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments, regular exposure to fumes, dust, oils and odors; may work on ladders or scaffolding; may work with exposure to moisture; seasonal heat or cold or adverse weather conditions; some exposure to childhood and other diseases in a school environment; regular contact with School site staff, and the public.


HAZARDS:

  • Exposure to fertilizer and pest control/cleaning chemicals
  • Potential for contact with bodily fluids, bloodborne pathogens and communicable diseases
  • Work around and with machinery having moving parts
  • Climb and use ladders at various heights
