The Position
The Director of Advancement is responsible for creating, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive fundraising program to support FSA's mission.

The position engages Board members and donors in development activities and leverages key relationships and contacts within and outside of FSA's network to ensure revenue goals are met.

Working closely with the CEO, the Director of Advancement is responsible for the following activities to support FSA's mission:


  • Recruit and cultivate donors
  • Further develop and oversee major gifts and planned giving programs
  • Support special capital and endowment initiatives
  • Cultivate business/corporate sponsorships


The Director of Advancement reports to the CEO, supervises the Event Management and Donor Relations Specialist, the Community Engagement Specialist, and the Communications and Marketing Manager, and works closely with the Director of Grants and Partnerships.

Sample Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Staff Supervision
  • Maintain staffing levels by recruiting, interviewing, selecting, orienting, developing, and evaluating.
  • Meet individually with direct reports on a weekly and/or biweekly basis to provide ongoing feedback and direction, support, consultation, and discuss any corrective actions as necessary.
  • Program Development, Compliance, and Evaluation
  • Collaborates with CEO in cultivating and maintaining donors through personal contact, specialized correspondence, and attending inperson visits.
  • Solicits and cultivates strategic donors, developing personal knowledge and understanding of donors; expands donor pool on all levels.
  • Along with the CEO, encourages, motivates, and supports the Board in cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors.
  • Identifies, prepares requests and participates in donor strategy and visits, and follows up on new and renewal contributions from individuals, foundations, clubs, organizations, and corporations. Acknowledges and appreciates all donors.
  • Works with Communication and Marketing Manager to produce major donors, corporate sponsors, and board solicitation/support materials with the intent to retain or upgrade gifts when possibl
  • Develops and refines, with the support and involvement of the CEO and Board, planned giving and major gifts activities.
  • Builds and maintains strong working relationships with Development and other Board and Committee Members through participation in the Development Committee.
  • Together with the Donor Relations and Event Management Specialist, coordinates fundraising, friendraising, and donor recognition events.
  • Community Partnerships
  • Work collaboratively with key staff to articulate, illustrate, and convey FSA's missiondriven work.
  • Develop effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, vendors, and donors.
  • Network and collaborate with community partners to cultivate relationships to increase FSA's visibility and position in the community.
  • Support and promote outreach efforts and community events with outreach materials, outreach kit, branding, and publicity.
  • Management Team Member
  • Participate in Program Management Team meetings to ensure alignment in program operations and strategic program development.
  • Participate in the ongoing development, evaluation, and implementation of operational and strategic plans.
  • Cultivate a climate that invites and motivates employees from diverse backgrounds, providing the platform and support to grow and lead at FSA.
