Description
Tasks

Orthoptists work in specialized departments at eye clinics, hospitals, neurological clinics, or with ophthalmologists in private practice. They also work in early intervention facilities, rehabilitation centers, and institutions for the blind and visually impaired.

The main task of an orthoptist is to assist in the prevention, examination, and treatment of disorders of the individual eye and disorders involving both eyes, caused by conditions such as strabismus, visual impairment, refractive errors, or nystagmus.

Preventive measures primarily focus on children, but also on adolescents, adults, and especially older people who increasingly suffer from visual impairments and strabismus. Rehabilitation is also becoming an important area of work for orthoptists, as brain injuries often result in visual impairments such as strabismus, double vision, or nystagmus, which need to be treated by an orthoptist.

In collaboration with ophthalmologists, orthoptists diagnose these visual impairments and strabismus and initiate appropriate treatment measures.

Orthoptists have a high level of personal responsibility in carrying out these tasks.
