SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Recreation Aquatics Supervisor, the Beach Director is responsible for overseeing the Beach Managers and the daily operations of the beaches including front gate, office, boat rentals, picnic reservations, swim lessons, sailing lessons and special events.

Assist the Recreation Aquatics Supervisor with hiring, training, and evaluating aquatic staff. The Beach Director must maintain a professional environment between staff and guest for a safe and fun experience.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Preferred degree or college experience in Parks, Recreation, Tourism, Kinesiology, Physical Education, Sports Management or related degree
  • Minimum of 3 seasons of aquatic experience that includes a minimum of one season as a manager, assistant manager or other equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of beach operations and understanding of the facility characteristics, rules, policies and procedures
  • Must possess, or have the ability to obtain
  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding Management certification
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED Certification
  • American Red Cross Waterfront Skills Certification
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification is preferred
  • Water Safety Instructor certification is preferred
  • Valid drivers' license and current car insurance
  • Ability to enforce beach regulations
  • Knowledge and skills with computers and software (Outlook, Word, Excel, WhenToWork and Rectrac) or the ability to learn quickly.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, problem solve and use good sense of judgment
  • Ability to deal with the public tactfully and courteously

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Report directly to Recreation Aquatics Supervisor, keep open lines of communication
  • Implement measures that insure smooth day to day operation of beaches
  • Assure the safety of all guests and staff
  • Take control of and act decisively in emergency situations, responding calmly and quickly under pressure
  • Demonstrate and promote positive guest relations and exceptional customer service
  • Promote positive teamwork environment for all staff
  • Directly supervise Beach Managers and Swim Lesson Program Director
  • Oversee day to day cash handling procedures, controls and banks
  • Help organize and attend all preseason training and inseason trainings
  • Oversee staff scheduling and monitor employee work shifts, breaks and overall work performance
  • Assist Recreation Aquatics Supervisor with picnic reservations, boat rentals, office procedures and special events
  • Responsible for overseeing safe and well organized swim programs including but not limited to group, private and camp swim lessons.
  • Plan and lead effective weekly manager meetings
  • Troubleshoot to prevent potential problems
  • Inform all staff of any changes in policy, procedure or rules as handed down by the Recreation Aquatics Supervisor
  • Complete all required paperwork, daily logs and reports
  • Demonstrate leadership
  • Enforce all facility rules and District policies and procedures
  • Diffuse potential situations between guests and staff
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment, notify Recreation Aquatics Supervisor of needs in advance
  • Maintains ability to work a flexible schedule
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

MARGINAL DUTIES

  • Attend PDRMA in service workshops/trainings
  • Attend park district meetings as necessary
  • Conduct weekly manager meetings with Recreation Aquatics Supervisor
  • Conduct regular staff meetings and trainings
  • Attend In-Service trainings as requested
  • Represent the Aquatics Department in various Beach Special Events
  • Perform beach manager, swim lesson director and lifeguard duties when necessary
  • Perform other duties as assigned

PHYSICAL CONSIDERATIONS

  • Must be able to lift, support, and/or restrain swimmers or program participants.
  • Must be in condition adequate to conduct on site inspection of park district facilities and operations
  • Must be able to perform manual labor with varying degrees of physical exertion
  • Must be able to list 50 pounds. Over 50 pounds with assistance.
  • May frequently be required to walk, sit, talk and hear
  • May frequently be required to use hand and/or fingers, handle feel and reach with hands and arms
  • May frequently be required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
  • May be in awkward or difficult positions resulting in physical fatigue
  • Must have specific vision abilities required for this job: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
