General Statement of Duties

The social work coordinator supports the work of the Specialist of School Social Work Services in the coordination of a comprehensive program of support to schools in the implementation of attendance policies and procedures.

Responsible for attendance protocol development in alignment with the strategic plan for the district, consultation, collaboration with principals, attendance secretaries, technology support staff and external stakeholders.


Essential DutiesProvides assistance in the coordination of a comprehensive program of support to schools in the implementation of attendance policies and procedures.

  • Responsible for attendance protocol development, articulation of program alignment with the strategic plan for the district, consultation, collaboration, and program development with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provides guidance and support to attendance secretaries related to attendance code entries and setting attendance alerts.
  • Develops, reviews, analyzes, and updates programs for delivery of school social work services and preparation of system level reports.
  • Conducts observations of attendance officers and social workers.
  • Provides and coordinates professional learning aligned to areas of need.
  • In collaboration with the supervisor, conducts evaluation of the School Social Work Program.
  • Ensures data related to attendance is collected and maintained.
  • Initiates and maintains liaison with juvenile court, and other key community service providers.
  • Provides court coverage for PPP cases filed by Attendance Officers.
  • Responds to calls from community members and parents related to attendance/truancy concerns and resource information.
  • Serves on multidisciplinary school teams and alternates participation on district level teams with supervisor.
  • Required to have prompt, regular attendance inperson and be available to work onsite, inperson during regular business hours.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by an appropriate administrator or their representative.
  • Regular attendance is required

Minimum QualificationsStrong understanding of associated laws, including Virginia codes related to truancy, compulsory attendance, foster care, McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, IDEA, FERPA, etc.

  • Strong understanding of research related to chronic absenteeism and evidencedbased strategies to reduce excused and unexcused absences
  • Ability to provide support to schools in implementing Tiered Interventions to effectively address root causes of absences
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to lead attendance officers and to provide training.
  • Ability to interpret attendance policy and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and stakeholders from diverse cultural, social, economic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage work assignments in an efficient manner and within established timeframes.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt as needed between inperson work environments.

Must hold a valid Virginia Pupil Personnel Services license with an endorsement in school social work with a minimum of 3 years successful experience as a school social worker.

Experience which includes a base knowledge of social learning theories, knowledge of theories of social interaction, and knowledge of methods for collecting and disaggregating data to inform practice.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to provide a wide range of services at multiple sites with varying needs and an understanding of the organization of schools, school policies and procedures related to attendance, and VA Code related to attendance required.


Additional Information
Must The minimum salary for this 12-month / 260-day position is $72,875. Annual salary will be prorated based upon work begin date.
