Position Summary/Purpose:


Milwaukee Recreation is seeking a customer driven, team-oriented individual to provide pool operation support services for the district's network of indoor pools, wading pools and splash pads.

Primary responsibilities include regularly inspecting aquatic facilities used by Milwaukee Recreation throughout the city of Milwaukee; performing minor maintenance tasks (e.g.

chemical refill, flushing, backwashing) to keep aquatic facilities online; communicating work order requests to appropriate Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) Department of Facilities and Maintenance Services (DFMS) shops (e.g., electrical, machine, mason, plumbing); conducting basic pool operation training; and regularly monitoring the water chemistry system to prevent mechanical/chemical emergencies.

Essential Functions:


  • Assists with the safe operation of swimming pools in accordance with City of Milwaukee and Wisconsin State codes.
  • Schedules and communicates annual City of Milwaukee public pool inspections.
  • Inspects aquatic facilities used by Milwaukee Recreation and prepares reports.
  • Monitors pool chemical inventory.
  • Coordinates pool related repairs and maintenance needs with MPS Facilities and Maintenance Services personnel.
  • Prepares and maintains inspection and incident reports and follows up as necessary.
  • Assists in developing the aquatics budget as it relates to maintenance needs.
  • Meets regularly with designated MPS Facilities and Maintenance Services personnel to discuss pool operations.
  • Offers pool operation workshops and training for various work groups.
  • Reviews and approves requisitions for materials and supplies in the area of responsibility.
  • Keeps Milwaukee Recreation personnel informed of major issues pertaining to pool and splash pad operations.
  • Serves as department representative in meetings regarding pool construction and repair.
  • Coordinates, in partnership with MPS Facilities and Maintenance Services, the annual pool cleaning schedule.
  • Assists with Recreation Department Activities as needed.
  • Serves on various community or department committees as required and/or assigned.
  • Actively supports the Milwaukee Public Schools Five Priorities for Success.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Education Requirements:_

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Mechanical or Environmental Engineering, Recreation Management, Environmental Science or related field. A combination of education and experience in a specialty field (Electrical, Machinist, Plumbing) will be considered.
  • Current Certified Pool Operator license (Pool and Hot Tub Alliance).
  • Aquatic Facility Operator Certification (National Recreation and Park Association) will be considered.
  • Certified Pool Operator Instructor/Aquatic Facility Operator Instructor or ability to obtain within 2 years.

Experience Requirements:_

  • Minimum 3 years' experience maintaining multiple municipal swimming pools or large commercial pools. Experience with D.E. diatomaceous earth septum filtration systems.
  • Experience with BECys pool controllers preferred, but other system experience will be considered. Experience with work order entry or other data management systems.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:_

  • Knowledge of applicable laws and codes related to pool maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the mechanical operations of pool equipment (pumps, chemical systems, pool vacuums, gas heaters, etc.), including repair and maintenance of equipment.
  • Ability to monitor and troubleshoot relevant equipment issues.
  • Ability to interpret daily chemical log sheets.
  • Ability to develop surveys, prepare reports, and maintain records.
  • Strong consulting skills.
  • Comfortable operating in an environment with multiple priorities and numerous deadlines. Possesses strong oral and written communication skills.

Working Environment:


  • Majority of the day will be spent at pool facilities or in an office setting.
  • Must be available outside of normal business hours when emergencies arise (position will rotate emergency phone responsibilities with aquatics supervisors and manager).
