The First Judicial District of Pennsylvania ("FJD") is the Philadelphia County Court System and is composed of two courts: the Court of Common Pleas and the Municipal Court.

The mission of the FJD is to adjudicate cases and provide services to the community within our jurisdiction while ensuring fair, timely, and accessible justice to the people of Philadelphia.

The FJD is part of the Unified Judicial System reporting into the Pennsylvania Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.


Job Description Position Summary**:


Performs entry-level escort, announcement, and ceremonial work in a court of law for the purpose of ensuring courtroom decorum, compliance to courtroom procedures and the facilitation of the overall functioning of the court during legal activities.

An employee in this class announces the opening of court and performs various duties which facilitate the courtroom proceedings.


Essential Functions:


  • The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or allinclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned._
  • Prepares the courtroom prior to the beginning of proceedings.
  • Open court by reciting standard announcements.
  • Reads bills of indictment.
  • Swears in witnesses and juror.
  • Assists in the process of selecting a jury.
  • Marks and records exhibits.
  • Provides limited courtroom security.
  • Checks bags and packages of persons entering courtroom.
  • Verifies that emergency phones are working.
  • Escorts jury panels to Deliberating Room and to and from meals and hotels.
  • Stays with sequestered jury panels overnight.
  • Makes necessary arrangements for sequestered jury panels in accordance with current rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Assures the integrity of the proceedings.
  • Assures that all parties required for the proper conduct of the trial are present.
  • Maintains all necessary records as indicated by current courtroom procedures.
  • Maintains and operates digital recording equipment.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, members of the judiciary, court and departmental administrators, and members of the public.

Marginal Functions:


  • Answers the telephone or may meet or greet callers.
  • Provides general information pertaining to assigned function.
  • Replenishes computer printer, copier or fax machine paper supplies.
  • Performs related work as required.

Enivronmental Conditions:


  • Standard courtroom conditions.
  • Direct contact with diverse court clientele.

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Ability to learn and apply, within a reasonable period of time, courtroom needs and techniques in civil, criminal or Traffic Court proceedings.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and follow written and oral directions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the members of the judiciary, jurors, attorneys, associates and the general public.

Qualifications

  • High school Diploma or equivalent.
OR


  • Equivalent combination of training and experience which provide the characteristics. required to perform the essential functions of the class may substitute for those listed.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions and work in the environment for the position.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background investigation.

Additional Information

Salary Range:
$43,207 - $47,350
