The Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer's & Neurodegenerative Diseases (Biggs Institute) in the Joe R.
and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio (UTHSA) is seeking a Senior Neurologist at the Associate or full Professor (or an Assistant Professor with at least 10 years clinical experience) level to serve as the Medical Director of the Clinical Services Program at the Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer's and Neurodegenerative Diseases.
The position will be partly funded by an Endowed Chair at the level of a Distinguished University Professor.The Biggs Institute was designated in 2021 as an NIA-funded South Texas ADRC (Alzheimer's Disease Research Center) in partnership with the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
The Institute has strong institutional and community support as well as substantial philanthropic and NIH funding. Led by founding Director, Dr.Sudha Seshadri, the Biggs Institute is a flagship institute within UTHSA with the mission of establishing an interdisciplinary, integrated program to provide comprehensive clinical care and undertake innovative and important research into the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative conditions, including vascular contributions to dementia, Parkinson's and Lewy body dementia, chronic traumatic encephalopathy and frontotemporal dementia.
By 2025, the Biggs Institute and Department of Neurology will be moving to an integrated 5-story Center for Brain Health that will house clinical space, clinical research facilities, and faculty offices.
The Medical Director will provide world-class direct patient care, manage relevant patient therapies, work with innovative clinical care management programs, including supportive care, and actively participate in and guide clinical research recruitment and supervision of residents, fellows, and students in various accredited programs.
Thus the selected candidate will collaborate with the leadership of the Glenn Biggs Institute (their administrative home) and the Department of Neurology (their academic home, led by Prof.
Carlayne Jackson, the current President of the American Academy of Neurology) to (i) develop innovative and visionary strategies to maintain and improve the quality of our already superb, multidisciplinary clinical care, (ii) provide physician leadership for our robust and growing clinical trials programs and (iii) work with the South Texas ADRC Outreach teams to improve access and services, especially to historically underserved communities.
Teaching responsibilities include didactic and informal teaching in the clinic, case conferences, and overseeing the learning experience of medical and nursing students, residents and fellows in Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychology, Geriatric Psychiatry rotating through the clinic working closely with the Residency and Fellowship Program Directors for these programs.
This is an ideal opportunity for a physician interested in combining creative, comprehensive, compassionate clinical care for a broad range of memory and cognitive disorders, as part of a multi-disciplinary team including neurologists, neuropsychologists, nurses, social workers, geriatricians, palliative/supportive care, sleep medicine, occupational therapy, psychotherapists, counselors, and care managers.
Physicians with experience caring for persons with Alzheimer's disease or other dementias, experience conducting clinical trials (as PI or site PI), or interested in studying mild behavioral impairment are welcome.
