Assistant Grower


North Country Growers is seeking a full-time Assistant Grower to join our team at our state-of-the-art Controlled Environment Agriculture facility in Berlin, NH.

The Assistant Grower is responsible for maintaining the growing schedule & plan, which includes seeding schedule, pond allocation, and harvest schedule.

The Assistant Grower will also support the growing team with inventory management, integrated pest management, and fertilizer mixing for the irrigation system.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Generate daily, weekly, and monthly growing and yield schedules within the inventory system based on sales demand.
  • Factor in greenhouse maintenance, variety growing times, pond logistics, and crop cycles into the grower plan to minimize impacts to production.
  • Regularly check to ensure crops are seeded, transferred, transplanted, and harvested accurately by the production team.
  • Notify Sales and Operations regarding schedule changes or other impacts to the plan.
  • Maintain accurate grower inventory counts within the inventory system for seed, peatmoss, and other consumables needed for growing.
  • Responsible for identifying crop issues and diagnosis of unknown health or damage problems and reporting to Head Grower.
  • Assist with cleaning and maintenance of irrigation system and injection equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure all duties are completed properly.
  • Maintain current knowledge of growing techniques and technologies.
  • Required to work weekends and holidays on a regular basis.
  • Respond to Priva alarms if needed; follows Priva and growing best practices to address a variety of issues.
  • As a food production facility strict protocol and guidelines for foodsafe operation will be enforced. This will include, but is not limited to, following regulations and procedures regarding hygiene, clothing, PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), safety, and operations.
  • Participate in any required company training, including safety and food safety.
  • Seed, monitor, and record data for trials on new crop varieties

Knowledge & Skill Requirements:


  • Familiar with Priva or similar growing software; able to gain proficiency in essential tasks (within two months).
  • Well organized and able to think critically through changes made.
  • Knowledge of horticulture.
  • Ability to communicate professionally in English.

Education And Experience:


  • Bachelor's degree in Horticulture Sciences, Biochemical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent number of years of experience.
  • Data systems experience preferred.
  • Ability to work well with a team.
  • Ability and motivation to maintain quality and efficiency in repetitive tasks.
  • Flexibility to work in a variety of functional areas and to transition between tasks as necessary.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality.

Supervisory:

  • This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities

Work Environment:

Greenhouse, 30%

  • The temperatures in the greenhouse vary depending on the weather outside.
  • Climate can range from hot and humid to cold depending on the location and time of year.
  • PPE must be worn at all times.
  • Monitoring plants, taking temperature and dissolved oxygen measurements, taking water samples for nutrient analysis, operating spray boom watering system
Office, 30%

  • Sitting at a desk and/or staring at a computer screen for extended periods of time.
  • Monitoring PRIVA control system, updating inventory, planning seeding/transplanting/harvesting schedules with Head Grower and Sales/Operations team
Irrigation room, 30%

  • PPE Must be warn when handling fertilizer.
  • Must abide by safety protocols in SDSs
  • Calculating fertilizer usage, mixing fertilizers, tracking fertilizer usage, monitoring inventory
Seeding/Transplanting Room, 10%

  • Verify quality of seeding, transplanting, and germination process.
