JOB SUMMARY:
Assists in the planning, organizing and development of medically approved recreation program for residents of Sunny Hill Nursing Home. Responsible for teaching classes, leading groups, planning of daily activities and assuring resident safety.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Plans group and one to one programs for an assigned unit based on resident's needs and interests and with a therapeutic recreation focus and implements these programs. May be assigned to cover programs on other units in the absence of other aides.
  • Leads group activities offered to all residents of the nursing home.
  • Teaches classes offered to all residents of the nursing home
  • Plans and supervises trips for residents
  • Supervises residents and instructs volunteers during activity programs
  • Prepares calendar of events for assigned unit.
  • Verbally reminds residents of programs and assists residents to and from programs as necessary.
  • Plans activity programs based on IDPH guidelines
  • Assists Activity Director in the assessment of residents
  • Reviews the assessment and follows through on plan of approach

MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT USED:


  • Handles equipment and supplies in a safe manner.
  • Reports any unsafe conditions to the activity director or assistant activity director or other appropriate supervisory staff
  • Pushes residents in wheelchairs, reclining chairs, etc. in a safe manner.
  • Provides for the safety of resident at programs and on outings.
  • Becomes fully informed of the Wanderguard System used for resident safety.
  • Reports any injuries incurred by residents to the unit nurse immediately and then to the activity director, assistant activity director or director of nursing.
  • Follows established policies and procedures, including appropriate dress, etc.
  • Responds to fire, accident and disasters as instructed.
  • Follows established infection control procedures when isolation precautions become necessary.
  • Follows established procedures governing exposure to body/blood fluids.
  • Reports any exposure to body/blood fluids.

EDUCATION AND PREVIOUS RELATED EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of a high school degree or equivalency is required.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.
  • Must be able to work harmoniously with other staff and volunteers.
  • Must possess patience, tact, cheerful disposition and enthusiasm.
  • Must be able to relate information concerning a resident's condition.

Ability to:

  • Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner.
  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the day.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so the requirements of the positions can be met.
  • Must function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, volunteers and support services.
  • Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.
  • Must be able to relate and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset and hostile people within the facility.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to assist residents by helping them stand, pushing them in their chairs, assisting them onto the van, etc. up to 300 pounds.
  • Must be able to assist in the evacuation of residents.

From $15.72 per hour
