    Position Description

    Job Title: Athletic Director

    FLSA: Exempt

    Job Status: Full Time

    Reporting Functions: Reports to the Principal

    Job Function: Oversee and provide guidance for the school's interscholastic athletic program. Work with the administration to improve and maintain programs and activities. Supervise personnel within the athletic program including all coaches and their staff. Plan and prepare the annual athletic budget for the school.

    Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Direct an interscholastic athletic program that promotes and protects the health, safety and educational welfare of all student-athletes. Provide equal opportunity for all students who wish to participate in interscholastic competition.
    • Serve as the school's athletic representative on conference, district and state levels. Participate in professional development activities on the local, regional, state or national level.
    • Subscribe to the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) Code of Ethics.
    • Plan and prepare the annual athletic budget.
    • Develop and oversee procedures for requisitioning and purchasing athletic equipment and supplies; review and submit purchases for administrative approval.
    • Develop and oversee policies and procedures for gate revenue; oversee proper accounting of such.
    • Develop and oversee appropriate rules and regulations governing the conduct of all athletic activities within the program, ensure accountability.
    • Recruit, interview, select and recommend coaches for contracted positions; develop duties and responsibilities for each coach and his/her staff; ensure that all required background checks are performed.
    • Supervise and monitor head coaches for each sport; provide support and recommendations; oversee coach's handbook, contracts and evaluations.
    • Supervise all athletic office personnel; perform annual performance reviews; coordinate all activities and functions of the athletic office.
    • Coordinate contracting with local police to provide security for basketball, wrestling and varsity football home games; coordinate leasing arrangements for use of off-site facilities including football stadium for varsity football.
    • Ensure that arrangements are made for any visiting team's needs, services and field assistance as needed.
    • Plan and oversee all Athletic Awards assemblies, Scholar Athletes and the school's Athletic Wall of Fame; attend all sporting events where admission is charged or arrange for coverage of such.
    • Seek administrative approval for any event that may deviate from the set school schedule, dress code or any school/diocesan policy.
    • Work with other school administrators to ensure that all student athletes are academically eligible to participate in any given sport.
    • Distribute pertinent athletic-related information to the media and school website when necessary; ensure that the local community is aware of and responsive to the athletic program at the school.
    • Any other duties as assigned by the Principal or his or her designee.
    Educational Requirements:
    • Bachelor's Degree in Education, Physical Education, or a related field.
    • Experience in school athletic setting preferred, not required.

    Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by the means of spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms using a keyboard and video display terminal. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. The employee may occasionally climb stairs or ladders.

    Working Conditions: Full-time, 12-month position; paid vacation included. Standard office setting including standard office equipment with the standard gymnasium/athletic event setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high depending upon student population and activities. The employee is regularly exposed to wet or humid outdoor weather conditions and hot and/or humid gymnasium environment(s). The employee may be exposed to blood-borne pathogens. 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. May be required to assist with special duties and work outside the normal school day to attend school-related events; some travel may be required.
