Job DescriptionBayLegal seeks a family law attorney with a strong commitment to public interest and social justice advocacy to join our team. This position is based in our Alameda County regional office in Oakland. The position reports to the Managing Attorney of Alameda County regional office and is a member of and supported by BayLegal's regional multi-county inter-personal violence prevention family law and immigration team.

As a BayLegal Staff Attorney you will have the opportunity to:

Learn and assist with the diverse legal needs of underserved and marginalized communities throughout the Bay Area to reduce homelessness, enhance stability and address social injustice;
Represent low-income survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in an array of family court proceedings, including dissolution, child custody and support, parentage actions, and restraining orders;
Represent immigrant survivors of interpersonal violence in seeking and obtaining immigration relief through U Visa, VAWA, and Adjustment of Status petitions;
Learn and practice and collaborate with BayLegal colleagues in BayLegal's multiple substantive practice areas and evolving service delivery programs;
Supervise and mentor volunteers and interns, and identifying systemic issues and ways to improve access;
Co-counsel on cases and matters with and acts as a resource and provide training for less experienced attorneys and advocates;
Provide workshops and technical assistance to community partners and client communities on family law and a broad range of civil legal issues;
Develop relationships and engage in collaboration with a range of public and private community partners, including governmental agencies, courts, and community-based organizations, to ensure integrative services and address systemic barriers facing BayLegal's client community;
Work closely with BayLegal's development, grants and contracts, and communications team to promote BayLegal's mission and resource development; and
Engage in other tasks and projects that further the interest of BayLegal's mission and operations as a non-profit .

Received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination by date of hire to be considered.
Member of CA Bar in good standing or admitted to practice in another state and eligible to practice in California for 3 years under the California State Bar rules for the Registered Legal Services Attorney Program preferred. Experience and/or interest in working with survivors of trauma.
Two or more years of relevant family law experience preferred.
Bilingual ability in a language spoken by BayLegal client community preferred.
Ability to organize time, manage diverse activities, and meet critical deadlines with minimal supervision.
Excellent writing, editing, and proof-reading skills, with ability to be detail oriented.
An ability to work collaboratively with a dynamic team
Curious and self-directed with an ability to anticipate what needs to be done.
Ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects while maintaining a firm grasp of individual project details.
Commitment to complying with all California Rules of Professional Conduct, BayLegal funding requirements, and firm standards, policies, and practices.
Current proficiency, and ability to improve proficiency, in technological equipment, hardware and software necessary to perform duties of the position.
Sense of humor and proactive problem-solver.

HYBRID WORK OPTION: BayLegal is committed to the health and safety of our staff, clients, and community. BayLegal has an evolving plan to continue to safely increase in-person services and activities in our offices and community-based advocacy sites. BayLegal employees are expected to work on-site and in-person three (3) days per week and may work remotely from home on a part-time basis. Employees are expected to reside in California and at a distance allowing them to commute to their physical BayLegal base location, and to other service delivery locations as needed, during the standard work week.
