Summary:


Under the supervision of the Membership Director, the Membership Associate is responsible for creating and nurturing a seamless and meaningful YMCA member experience, from first point of contact with the Y to daily engagement of current members by demonstrating our core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

Individuals selected for this position welcome, educate and invite potential members to join our organization and deliver outstanding service to members and guests.

It is our mission to change lives and the first step in this is to help potential members make that decision.


Minimum Requirements:


  • Outstanding interpersonal and verbal communications a must in order to drive association and branch objectives of improving acquisition and retention of members.
  • Desire to help people improve their health and well being.
  • The ability to learn in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work in a team setting with both staff and volunteers, and the vision to see new opportunities and respond to them.
  • Experience and/or ability to close a sale after giving a tour.
  • Applies creative problem-solving to ensure member satisfaction and retention.
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.

Essential Functions:
Membership Department Operations


  • Enjoy, be skilled at and understand the importance of building relationships with people: members, staff, volunteers, donors, community leaders.
  • High degree of accuracy with information provided, multi-task oriented; able to take initiative; effective organizational skills; effective communication skills.

Performance Criteria:
Acquisition and Member Processes


  • Inform interested guests of the benefits of the YMCA, provide tours and invite people to join/close the sale.
  • Follows up with potential members after tour has taken place making at least one "live" contact within a week of tour.
  • Meet individually established goals as agreed upon by Membership Coordinator and/or Membership Director.
  • Accept mentoring and coaching as a way to improve upon individual and team goals.

Performance Criteria:
Member Engagement


  • Greet members and guests, making eye contact and using member names in their presence.
  • Answer phone professionally using your name, and address inquiries and questions with a happy and respectful tone.
  • Be knowledgeable about programs, policies, benefits and the latest developments of your branch and encourages participation in programs.
  • Be able to articulate the YMCA's mission, values, benefits.
  • Show interest in member suggestions and concerns and addresses complaints immediately.
  • Complete membership and program enrollment in Membership data base.
  • Receipt money transactions and program sign-ups.
  • Serve as liaison between members and program supervisors.
  • Emphasize fun, make the Y a happy place with positive relationships.
  • All other duties assigned by Director.

Qualification Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent or two-years related experience and/or training in general office management; or equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the desirable knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and facilitate.
  • Ability to read and analyze.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors, coworkers, volunteers, members, donors and the general public.

Working Environment/Minimum Physical Requirement:


You must have the physical, visual and auditory ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations

Position regularly requires the ability to do word processing, data entry and filing for several hours at a time. Position may require, sitting, bending, leaning and kneeling on an occasional basis. Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds in order to perform essential functions.

All employees working with the YMCA are considered to have supervisory or disciplinary action relationship over minors. Back ground check will be done prior and submitted to Association Office human resources department prior to employment consideration. Employees may be re-checked every two years.

  • Specific increase in member engagement and other categories as related to the Member Satisfaction survey.
  • A high quality, high value member experience that results in fiscal stability for the branch.
  • Friendly and knowledgeable communications serve as a basis for contact between staff and members and will be evident in an increase in Staff
