PROBATION:
All persons, including current City employees, selected from this position will be on probation for 6 months.


CLASS DESCRIPTION


A Medical Office Assistant performs office support and clinical duties as assigned by a health professional in accordance with Maryland State law.

Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.

Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek. Work is performed in an office and a clinic where there may be exposure to contagious diseases. Work usually requires mínimal physical effort but may involve lifting and pushing.


SELECTION PROCESS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate and either completion of a phlebotomy course, or a Medical Assistant program which includes office practice, including data entry, clinical skills, venipuncture, and completion of an externship, which is accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) of the American Medical Association in collaboration with the American Association of Medical Assistant, or by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), or by the Accredited Commission for Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC), and one year experience in a clinical setting.

NOTES(EQUIVALENCIES): An Associate of Arts degree in a medical program that includes office practice, clinical skills, and completion of an externship from an accredited college or university.

REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES:

Some positions in this class may require employees to hold and maintain current certifications as a Certified Nursing Assistant or Certified Medication Technician, issued by the Maryland Board of Nursing, or Phlebotomist.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of medical billing practices.
  • Knowledge of computerized medical databases.
  • Knowledge of basic anatomy, physiology, clinical and laboratory procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic laws related to professional liability and patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to enter medical information into a computerized medical and billing management database.
  • Ability to triage and obtain information from sick or injured persons.
  • Ability to draw blood from children or adults by venipuncture and take patients' health measurements.
  • Ability to follow health care professionals' instructions accurately and carefully.
  • Ability to perform routine medical tests and procedures and health screens.
  • Ability to perform light typing.
  • Ability to maintain patient medical record files and billing records.
  • Ability to perform CPR and First Aid.
  • Ability to ambulate stairs to respond to medical emergencies.
