    Job Summary
    The Dean of College of Arts of Sciences, reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, oversees the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) to enhance its visibility, effectiveness, and impact. As Chief Academic Officer of the CAS, the Dean is responsible for the academic, personnel, financial, and administrative affairs of the CAS. The Dean is also responsible for communicating the vision and goals of the CAS to community and professional constituencies and seeking public and private funds to support the goals of the CAS.

    Job Description
    The Dean functions as the Chief Executive Officer of the CAS, engaged in the programmatic aspect of the Campus/University mission. This position is responsible for administration and execution of the CAS's policies. The College consists of 11 diverse departments, offering 19 undergraduate degree programs, 10 Master's degree programs and seven post-baccalaureate certificates. The Dean provides oversight for five special programs (CSU-TV, Military Science, Pre-Law Education, Pre-Medical Education and WSCU Radio) and three centers (Calumet Environmental Resource Center, The Center for STEM Education and Research and the Neighborhood Assistance Center) within the College.

    Primary Responsibilities Include:
    • Leads the development, implementation and evaluation of the strategic plan for COE.
    • Exercises management responsibility for academic program planning, fiscal, personnel and administrative affairs of College of Arts and Sciences.
    • Demonstrates awareness of current local, national and international trends and opportunities in education to advance the College.
    • Leads the faculty in governance, promoting a culture of excellence, ethics, service and continuous improvement.
    • Fosters a climate of research and innovation to impact educational outcomes in all levels of education).
    • Leads recruitment and retention efforts of high caliber and diverse student populations.
    • Leads recruiting, hiring and retention efforts for highly qualified faculty and staff; comply with collective bargaining contracts.
    • Promotes professional development and innovation to ensure competence and effectiveness of College faculty, staff and graduates.
    • Directs national or state accreditation and certification, assessment and ongoing program development of academic programs.
    • Sustains productive working relationships with faculty, students, university administrators, alumni and the broader community on interdisciplinary and collaborative projects.
    • Leads effective fiscal management of public and private funding for the College and expanding alternative revenues to enhance the College.
    • Serve as the professional liaison with government and professional agencies and associations.
    • Demonstrates commitment to shared governance; commitment to innovation, inter-professional education and administrative flexibility; and a strong commitment to developing and sustaining community partnerships.


    Minimum Qualifications
    The successful candidate will hold a doctorate or appropriate terminal degree for tenure from a regionally accredited institution, and have an excellent record of teaching, scholarship and service that merits tenure at the level of Professor at Chicago State University. The candidate should have at least five years of administrative experience in a university at the level of department chair or above. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate:
    • Successful record of decision making, management, and administrative experience including setting priorities, managing diverse personnel and complex budgets;
    • An exemplary record of promoting scholarship and research;
    • Experience in recruiting and retaining students, advancing student success, and building academic excellence;
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and possess an outstanding record of leadership, advocacy, and community partnership.
    • Experience with assessment and accreditation
    • Teaching experience at the university level including experience teaching at the graduate level

    • Experience working with urban, collective bargaining educational systems; demonstrates a collaborative and open communication and management style with an ability to build relationships within and beyond the College and possess enrollment management skills to achieve higher rates of retention and graduation.
    • Ability to articulate the College's mission, goals, accomplishments, and needs to a broad range of external constituencies, including alumni, academic, government representatives, and business communities.
    • Passion for facilitating the success of others, including faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders.
    • Outstanding communication skills with strong interpersonal skills
    • Demonstrated ability to lead by consensus and with transparency.
    • Experience in supporting and cultivating a distinguished, accomplished, and diverse faculty.


    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Must have a proven and demonstrated an outstanding record in teaching, mentoring, and directing research of undergraduate and graduate students; a commitment to shared governance, indicators of innovative planning, outcomes and administrative flexibility; and a strong record of grantsmanship. S/he must demonstrate a deep understanding of retention and timely graduation with a particular emphasis on culturally diverse and non-traditional student populations.
    • Must demonstrate awareness of current local, national, and international opportunities in higher education; especially, use of technology and industrial partnership, and must have the vision and ability to harness them to advance the progress of the college.
    • Must have the ability to lead the faculty in governance, promoting a culture of excellence and service, and fostering research and innovation. Engage in strategic planning, allocating resources, recruiting outstanding faculty, and the ability to progressively lead the college toward great academic purpose.
