Join the passionate team at Wilmington Head Start, Inc. as a Teacher Assistant and play a vital role in providing a nurturing and educational environment for preschool children.

As a Teacher Assistant, you will collaborate with children, parents, volunteers, and staff to create an engaging early childhood classroom.

By following program guidelines, state regulations, and organizational policies, you will contribute to the overall growth and development of young learners.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Supervise the classroom in the absence of the Teacher, ensuring a smooth operation.
  • Maintain confidentiality of children and their families' information.
  • Assist in creating a positive and nurturing atmosphere conducive to learning, including room arrangement, cleanliness, and appearance, in coordination with the classroom Teacher.
  • Ensure compliance with all established Wilmington Head Start (WHS) program policies, Head Start Performance Standards, and Delacare regulations.
  • Create a friendly and pleasant atmosphere in the classroom by greeting children, parents, and visitors warmly.
  • Assist in planning and conducting field trips alongside the classroom Teacher.
  • Participate in familystyle dining and accurately record meal counts at the point of service on a daily basis.
  • Maintain attendance records, ensuring children are signed in and out of the classroom, and keep track of the number of children present.
  • Assist in enforcing the Positive Guidance policy and demonstrate good judgment in handling crisis situations.
  • Prepare classroom supplies for various activities.
  • Provide individualized assistance to children as needed.
  • Support safety procedures and basic inventory maintenance.
  • Engage in activities with children based on lesson plans.
  • Assist the Teacher with lesson planning.
  • Participate in all required WHS curriculum activities.
  • Follow the daily classroom schedule.
  • Assist with transition activities for children throughout the day.
  • Interact with children at their developmental level in the classroom, on the playground, and during field trips.
  • Attend to children's personal hygiene needs, such as wiping noses, changing garments, and cleaning faces and hands.
  • Attend required staff meetings.

Qualifications:


  • Child Development Associate (CDA) or TECE 1 & 2, High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) with related experience and training in Early Childhood Education (ECE). DOE/Delaware 1st Teacher Assistant Certificate.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check as required by Delaware law and organizational policies.
  • No citations for abuse or neglect.
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR.
  • Administration of Medication certificate.
  • Bilingual abilities desired.

Physical Demands:


  • Ability to pass a physical examination and TB test.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, stand, walk, sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment:


  • The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.
