DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW


The Film & Digital Media Department includes 19 faculty members, approximately 600 undergraduate students, and 50 graduate students; our facilities include the Communications Building, a wing in the new Kresge Academic Center, and the forthcoming Social Documentation Lab in the University's Westside Research Park.

Specialized facilities and equipment include a 90 seat theater with a Barco Digital Cinema Projector, a motion capture stage, VR equipment, and more.


JOB SUMMARY


Under the general direction of the Film and Digital Media Department Manager; the Film and Digital Media Technical Director oversees the daily operation of the department's technical services, manages all Film and Digital Media (FDM) spaces and facilities, and provides direct supervision and backup to FDM Operations staff.

In consultation with the department chair and department manager, the FDM Technical Director manages all of the technical functions and services of the department; is responsible for the development, implementation and execution of policy related to space and equipment; manages the department's operations budget; and serves as the project manager for all FDM operations and facilities projects.

The incumbent will analyze and develop proposals for future technical, equipment, space, and budget needs.


APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary:
$80,300 - $85,000/annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.


Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role.

The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES
30% - Technical/Production Unit Management

  • Manages the technical and operational functions of unit. Oversees loan and checkout programs of departmental equipment to faculty and students. Oversees equipment and related inventory management practices.
  • Coordinates maintenance and repair of technical equipment. Responsible for overseeing the repair and maintenance of equipment, including camera systems, audio recorders, editing and recording workstations, classroom media equipment, video/data projectors and computers and peripherals. Works with FDM Operations and IT staff to identify and correct configuration and equipment problems and makes determination on repair processes.
  • Oversees the installation, replacement and modification of workstations, peripherals, video/data projectors, and video audio/data networks, including patch bays.
  • In consultation and coordination with FDM's Information and Technology (ITS) staff, works with Arts Division ITS liaison for department's computing and IT needs.
  • Meets regularly with FDM department chair, department manager, operations and IT staff to discuss the technical needs of the department; meets with other FDM faculty and attends FDM faculty/department, Arts Division, and other campus meetings as needed.
  • In consultation with the department chair and FDM operations staff, drafts, revises, oversees, and enforces policies and procedures related to equipment.
  • In consultation with the department chair, researches and purchases equipment, services, furnishings, tools and materials in compliance with policy and procedures. Works with campus vendors to facilitate purchases and services.
  • Serves as "backup for all supervisees, responding to equipment checkout, omnilock programming, and classroom support needs during absences and as needed.
  • Assists faculty in research, investigation, evaluation and purchase of software and hardware pertinent to instructional curriculum. Provides technical assistance and make recommendations based on needs of program relevant to instruction.
