  • Salary range: $70, $189,574.00The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is the largest Fire Department in the United States and universally is recognized as the world's busiest and most highly skilled emergency response agency. The Department's main goal is to provide fire protection, emergency medical care, and other critical public safety services to residents and visitors in the five boroughs. FDNY members are sworn to serve and protect life and property and the Department works to continually educate the public in fire, life safety and disaster preparedness, along with enforcing public safety codes. Since its inception in 1865, FDNY has helped lead efforts to make New York the safest big city in the nation. This accomplishment requires a steadfast and daily commitment to maintaining the Department's core values.


The Bureau consists of administrative, architect, compliance, construction project manager, and industrial chemist to skilled trade titles (e.g., carpenter, plumber, electrician, and stationary engineer).

We are responsible for the repair and maintenance of approximately over 400 Department facilities Citywide as well as (in coordination with the Department of Design and Construction (DDC) for the design and construction management for all new agency facilities and major construction projects (e.g., apparatus floors, gut rehabilitation projects, etc.) - however in the majority of these projects BFM serves as the lead and manages all design and construction activities.

This includes inter-agency project management as well as management of our own engineering/architectural design consultants and construction trades requirements contracts.

Their work is comprised of the preparation of construction documents for the renovation and repair of firehouses, EMS stations, offices, and storage spaces; executing complex and essential research, investigations, and studies related to Department facilities in relation to our operational needs as well as City, State, and Federal regulatory codes.

Staff also performs "in house" design of small-scale projects for our skilled trades unit use in performing these renovations.

Additionally, the BFM also manages the agency's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Unit, serves as the project manager for all OMB sponsored Capital Project Scope Development (CPSD) studies and manages the in-house consultant.

Minimum QualificationsAt least six years of full-time satisfactory experience in construction management work on capital projects, each one of which must have had a dollar value of at least $300,000, at least eighteen months of which must have been in a managerial or consultative capacity in an organization responsible for the management of construction; and a combination of the following, sufficient to equal a total of ten years of education and experience:

  • Full-time satisfactory experience in construction inspection on capital projects, each one of which must have had a dollar value of at least $300,000. One year of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of construction inspection experience up to a maximum of four years.
  • Full-time satisfactory experience in building construction as a journeyperson in one or more of the skilled building construction trades. One year of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of journeyperson experience up to a maximum of four years.
  • Education in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree in architecture, landscape architecture, or air pollution control, chemical, civil including structural and bridge design, electrical, mechanical, or sanitary engineering will be credited on the basis of 30 semester credits for one year of acceptable experience up to a maximum of four years.
License Requirements
Possession of a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. Employees must maintain the license during their employment.
