- Reviews plumbing, gas, and mechanical blueprints for commercial and industrial jobs to ensure compliance with standard plumbing, gas, and mechanical codes.
- Patrols assigned district to ensure all construction work is permitted; checks ongoing jobs to ensure inspections have been requested.
- Meets with contractors on job sites regarding plumbing, gas, and mechanical violations.
- Plans route throughout district to assure priority inspections are made in a timely manner.
- Responds to questions from contractors and the general public.
- Enters data into computer system to create a permanent record of each construction job and to access records to review status of ongoing work.
- Participates in weekly plumbing, gas, and mechanical training classes.
- Fuels, cleans, and maintains assigned vehicle.
- Attends departmental staff meetings.
- Writes Requests for Compliance and citations; prepares and presents court cases.
- Meets with contractors and architects regarding problems with blueprint reviews.
- Meets with supervisor on difficult or unusual enforcement situations.
- Inspects job sites for adherence to soil erosion and sedimentation requirements.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Description
This position performs inspections to ensure compliance with the requirements of standard plumbing, gas, and mechanical codes in new and existing, residential, commercial, and industrial establishments.
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain International Code Council (ICC) certifications of Commercial Plumbing Inspector within two years and Commercial Mechanical Inspector within three years.
This position requires the employee to be sworn in by the Columbus Police Department, which may involve additional criminal history background checks.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table. The employee must occasionally lift light objects.
