OBJECTIVE:

The individual in this role works regular shifts at the Children's Desk, oversees the area, and offers support with circulation, readers' advisory, reference, and other customer services for both children and adults, whether individually or in groups.

This role involves delivering early literacy storytimes, organizing children's and family programs, and engaging with the community, both within the library and externally.

Additionally, this position may involve tasks such as collection development, scheduling, generating monthly reports and statistics, and coordinating in-room activities.

RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to: Head of Youth Services
No regular supervisory responsibilities.
Regular interaction with Youth Services Librarians, as well as staff from other departments.
Essential Duties:
  • To succeed in this role, an individual must be able to effectively carry out each essential duty. Reasonable accommodations can be provided for individuals with disabilities.
  • Utilize various resources to provide assistance with computers, readers' advisory, and reference queries to children, parents/caregivers, teachers, and other library users in person and over the phone.
  • Supervise the Children's Room to ensure general safety, appropriate conduct, and to build long-term relationships to cultivate lifelong library patrons.
  • Have a good understanding of library policies and communicate them clearly to patrons.
  • Help plan and execute early literacy storytimes and other programs for families and children aged zero to eleven, along with their teachers and caregivers.
  • Participate in the summer library program implementation.
  • Promote early literacy, departmental resources, services, and programs through creating displays, leading tours and visits both on and off-site, participating in community engagement initiatives, and contributing to social media upkeep as assigned.
  • May be tasked with managing a specific collection.
  • May be responsible for coordinating monthly statistics & reports, departmental schedules, displays, in-room activities & toys, or other ongoing duties.
  • Represent the Youth Services Department on committees within Hedberg Public Library and the community at the request of the Head of Youth Services.
  • Foster collaborative partnerships with community organizations, businesses, educational bodies, and agencies in the City of Janesville.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, the public, and volunteers.
  • Undertake other special projects and tasks as assigned or necessary during and after regular business hours, including providing support as part of any City response to essential or emergency operations.
Minimum Position Requirements/Qualifications:
RECOMMENDED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • The following requirements represent the knowledge, skill, and/or ability necessary to effectively fulfill the essential duties of the position.
Education and Experience
  • Some college education required. A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of library experience, or several years of experience in a related field working with children or any equivalent combination of college and work experience that equips the individual with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential duties of the role is a must.
Knowledge of:
  • Library classification system.
  • Proficiency in computers and data processing equipment (e.g., Microsoft Office software) is essential.
  • Familiarity with electronic resources, including the internet and educational or library-related websites.
Skill in:
  • Effective public speaking and interpersonal communication.
  • Managing detailed work effectively.
  • Implementing best practices in customer service.
Ability to:
  • Connect with children (zero to eleven), their parents, caregivers, teachers, and the general public.
  • Review and be knowledgeable about both new and classic content.
