    Description

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION


    Performs difficult, skilled and technical work related to the mechanical repairs, safety inspections and preventive maintenance of a variety of automobiles, gas and diesel trucks, trailers and equipment for the County, Western Virginia Water Authority, and other smaller fleets.

    This position assumes responsibilities that exceed those of a Mechanic I.

    Works under the supervision of the Fleet Manager in accordance with current laws, government regulations, and the County's Fleet Management Policy.

    Performs other duties as assigned.


    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    • Performs preventive maintenance inspections, service and repairs as required
    • Performs Virginia State Inspections and completes necessary safety and related repairs
    • Repairs, changes, balances, and inspects tires for proper condition and air pressure
    • Operates complex computerized automotive diagnostic testing equipment in order to diagnose engine and other system malfunctions
    • Overhauls and repairs fuel systems and ignition systems
    • Repairs and overhauls brakes, transmissions, clutches, differentials, steering mechanisms, and front and rear axle assemblies
    • Overhauls, tunes and adjusts engines using specialized and standard test equipment
    • Services, repairs and installs hydraulic controls and other hydraulic system components including lines, pumps and cylinders
    • Performs electrical and electronic repairs; replaces lights, alternators and starters
    • Troubleshoots and repairs vehicle air conditioning and heating systems
    • Orders parts and vendor services with approval of Fleet Manager
    • Performs minor body and paint work
    • Tracks vehicle/equipment information and records in fleet management software
    • Maintains vehicle bays, general shop and parts areas in a clean and orderly state
