Job Description Summary


The Center for Media at Risk at the Annenberg School for Communication fosters free and critical media practice and scholarship.

In a climate where intimidation threatens media practitioners worldwide and disinformation campaigns destabilize public trust, the Center offers the chance to strategize in response to the multiple risks facing media practitioners globally.


Reporting to the Director of the Center for Media at Risk, the Research & Outreach Director will work collaboratively to expand the Center's impact through enhanced research, outreach, and networking activities, including but not limited to engagement and partnership with affiliates, alumni, practitioners, media organizations, graduate students, funders, and more.

Other responsibilities include strategic planning and budgeting; mentoring the Center's doctoral fellows; assisting in hosting postdoctoral fellows, visiting scholars, and speakers; and developing and editing the Center newsletter and other communications.

The Research & Programs Director will also represent the Center for Media at Risk Director within Penn and beyond.


Job Description:


Expand the center's research and outreach by:

  • Overseeing the planning, operation and management of a broad range of projects and activities connected to the Center.
  • Providing leadership, planning and management for the design, development and implementation of research, such as the development and implementation of a structured research component for existing and new programming and the translation of project goals into research strategies.
  • Developing and maintaining networks and partnerships with local media organizations with the goal of generating new research opportunities.-
  • Engaging Center affiliates in collaborative research projects and managing project activities, timelines, deliverables, etc.
  • Conducting applied media research in the Philadelphia area via other centers at Penn and elsewhere.
  • Engaging school alumni as research mentors for Doctoral Fellows.
  • Increasing Graduate Fellows' research outputs by formalizing their Fellowship roles.

Working collaboratively with other Center staff:

  • Planning and executing the Center's annual program of events, including colloquia, lectures, workshops and symposia.
  • Participating in strategic planning and budget management.
  • Developing the Center newsletter, website content and other external communications.
  • Contributing to the preparation of the Center's annual report.
  • Assisting Doctoral Fellows in planning and producing Center outputs.
  • Supporting the Center's Visiting Scholars.

Qualifications:
PhD required, in media or communication studies preferred and 5 to 7 years relevant experience. Global media research, understanding of media practitioners and familiarity with global media studies especially welcome.

Strong writing skills, including non-academic public writing, attention to detail, and organization required, as well as the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in coordination with other staff.

Must possess excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with a diverse population at all levels.

Previous experience working directly with research projects and sponsored programs/grant management (drafting proposals, managing budgets, etc.), administrative experience in academic settings, and experience working with students preferred.
