PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Associate Respiratory Therapist Level 1 will provide direct care and treatment to patients as prescribed by the physicians. The Associate Respiratory Therapist Level 1 will participate as part of the interdisciplinary team providing input as needed

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
There are specific clinical duties which will include but not limited to the following:

  • Responds to all Cardiopulmonary Emergencies, Rapid Response requests as assigned and provides respiratory care as needed.
  • Handles, administers, and monitors medical gases (E,H Cylinders) including heliox mixtures.
  • Administers aerosolized medications (bronchodilators, anti-inflammatory, mucolytic agents, and antibiotics), and evaluates the patient response to treatment and documents the results.
  • Initiates invasive and non-invasive ventilation, monitors and adjusts parameters and alarms as needed.
  • Obtains written orders for all therapies, invasive procedures and changes that are initiated.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in obtaining arterial blood gases for analysis.
  • Performs limited bedside spirometry.
  • Performs airway clearance utilizing chest physiotherapy and other devices (i.e. In/Exsuflator PEP devices etc.).
  • Participates in transporting mechanically ventilated and non-invasively ventilated patients.
  • Performs artificial airway maintenance, including suctioning, and ETT tape changes.
  • Completes required documentation in the hospital EMR and departmental records.
  • Use Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Perform cleaning, high level dis-infecting, setup testing, trouble shooting and maintenance of patient care equipment.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary communication of patient plan of care.
  • Responsible for communicating end of tour handoff report to oncoming staff.
  • Provide education to patients/family/Significant others about their therapeutic and preventative therapies.
  • Communicates any unusual and/or Hi-Risk occurrences or situations to the department supervisory staff on duty (and ADNs and/or AODs on weekends and holidays).
  • Completes other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Graduation from an Associate Degree program in Respiratory Therapy approved by the New York State Board of Education or a program determined equivalent in accordance with the Commissioner of the State Board of Education's regulations; and,
  • Possession of a current license to practice as a Respiratory Therapist in the State of New York; and,
  • Possession of current registration as a Respiratory Therapist issued by the National Board of Respiratory Care.

Special Notes:


At the time of appointment, and to maintain the position of Associate Respiratory Therapist, individuals must meet and maintain the licensure requirements set forth by the New York State Education Department covering the practice of respiratory therapy.
