Job purpose
The Certified Interpreter/Cultural Mediator provides proficient Spanish/English interpretation between patients/families and clinical providers.

Functions as critical member of the health care team assisting patients, consumers, and staff with any interpreter requests to provide meaningful access for individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP) and promote the most efficient, professional and friendly access to our facilities.


Duties and responsibilities

  • Provide accurate contemporaneous Spanish/English interpretation in facetoface or telephone encounters between Spanish speaking patients and families and hospital providers.
  • Conduct patient/family interactions with respect for differing culture, beliefs and levels of understanding.
  • Identifies & addresses the patient' s needs in an efficient and effective manner during clinical services
  • Ensures patient confidentiality and provides patients with needed information
  • Coordinates the system of interpretation requests and maintains qualitative/quantitative data on interpretation needs
  • Responsible for the evaluation and determination of employee proficiency in Spanish/English interpretation
  • Assists with and performs administrative tasks (scanning, mailing, etc.) as needed and as directed by the Assoc. Director/Director
  • Carries internal phone and responds to incoming requests from Clinical staff for interpretation needs

Qualifications

  • Certified Medical Interpreter (CMI), Certified Healthcare Interpreter (CHI) or Core CHI credentials required, or ability to achieve certification within 12 months of hire.
  • Ability to relate with effectiveness to the public, the patient, and the other staff of the Health Center
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to maintain effective rapport with patients, staff members and community
  • Knowledge/Interest in providing care to diverse patient population
  • Aware of ethical issues and standards related to interpreting
  • Ability to anticipate and comprehend potential cultural barriers to communicating concepts in healthcare
  • Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish (oral and written) including strong knowledge of medical terminology
  • Proficiency in speaking and understanding both spoken English and at least one other spoken language, including any necessary specialized vocabulary, terminology and phraseology, and must be able to effectively, accurately, and impartially communicate directly with individuals with limited English proficiency in their primary languages
  • High School Diploma/GED with 6 months' experience in a medical facility; Bachelor's in Health Services or relevant field highly preferred.
  • Ability to use computer and multiline telephones
Ability to cover rotating Evenings or Saturday morning shift as appropriate
