    Position Summary

    Starting Hiring Range: $34, $42,016.00, annually

    The purpose of this position is to perform general and clerical library work in support of circulation, customer assistance, material operations, and library programming.
    Essential Job Functions
    • Handle daily customer service and materials operations including checking items out, signing up new library patrons, processing returns, placing and processing holds, modifying patron accounts, and processing new items.
    • Answer phones and assist patrons with general questions.
    • Spread awareness of library services, activities, programs, and resources.
    • Guide patrons through the self-checkout process.
    • Resolve patron issues.
    • Empty book drop, inspect and check-in returned items; sort and shelve materials as needed.
    • Complete minor book repairs and assists in the processing of new materials as assigned.
    • Collect and record payments and balance cash drawer.
    • Assist with weeding and collection projects as assigned.
    • Assist with programs as assigned.
    • Assist with clerical duties as assigned such as developing brochures and flyers.
    • Monitor and relay needs to the Library Director for office supplies.
    • Uphold and implement library policies and procedures with staff and patrons.
    • Designate tasks to Library Pages and volunteers.
    • All other duties as assigned.
    Education and Experience

    Bachelor's degree in a related field is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Ability to interpret, apply, and uphold Library and City values, policies, and procedures.
    • Knowledge of library procedures, practices and techniques in a public library setting.
    • Ability to regularly interact with others and exchange and receive of information, providing effective and tactful customer service, and work independently with a high level of discretion.
    • Ability to interact with people in a professional and congenial manner.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all people.
    • Knowledge of information-finding strategies and reader's advisory.
    • Knowledge of automated circulation system functions (Koha).
    • Knowledge of Dewey Decimal System classification.
    • Knowledge and familiarity of library materials across various subject areas, fiction and non-fiction, authors, and titles.
    • Ability to communicate in a clear, effective, and concise manner, both orally and in writing.
    • Ability to troubleshoot simple technology issues on printers, scanners, and computers.
    • Ability to learn and perform basic operational, technical, and office processes.
    • Knowledge, skill, and ability to utilize telephone, fax machines, computers and applicable software daily including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Outlook, Laserfiche, and online databases.
    • Ability to be organized and have efficient management of time and deadlines.
    • Organization skills and attention to details.
    • Ability to quickly type and input data (35 wpm).
    • Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias, to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions, and measurement and to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
    • Ability to be punctual and attend work regularly.

    Must be willing to work weekends and evening.

    Fluency in Spanish or another foreign language highly preferred.

    Licenses & Certifications
    Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with acceptable driving record as established by the City of Midlothian driving standards.

    Work Environment
    Works primarily in climate-controlled office environment. Position requires lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, and pushing book carts. Physical demands are sedentary in nature but include walking, standing, reaching, grabbing, and bending. Work may cause light fatigue of eyes and fingers because of routine use of motor senses.

    The following benefits are among those available to eligible full-time employees:

    * Insurance - The City provides medical , dental, life and Long Term
    Disability Benefits which are paid 100% by the City for employee only.

    * Retirement - The City matches an employee's required contribution
    of 7 % to the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS) with a
    contribution of 14%. The retirement program contributions begin upon
    date of hire. Employees are vested in the retirement system after five
    years of employment and are eligible for retirement after 20 years.

    * Vacation Leave - Employees accrue two weeks (80 hours) of paid
    vacation each year for the first four years.

    * Deferred Compensation - A deferred Compensation (457) plan is administered through ICMA retirement Corporation. The City offers payroll deduction and the employee chooses the amount of investment and investment choices.

    * Longevity pay- employees become eligible for this year of continuous service at a rate of $4.00 per month not to exceed twenty-five years.

    * Employee Assistance Program - The City provides an employee assistance program through a third-party provider. Each employee has access to employee assistance for various confidential counseling services.

    * Flexible Benefit Plan - Dependent health insurance can be deducted from an employee's pre-tax income. Employees may also participate in a flexible spending account by setting aside pre-tax income to pay unreimbursed health expense and dependent child care.
