The Director of Marketing and Communications (DMC) is responsible for the planning and implementation of HSSA?s marketing, communications, and public relations program, both external and internal.

They provide direction and supervision of the Marketing and Communications Department and staff, including implementing at the strategic and tactical levels with the other functions of the organization.


Along with other directors and chiefs, the DMC provides leadership and direction to ensure the organization is communicating unified and strategic messages to support HSSA?s mission, vision, and short-and long-range strategic plan.

The DMC collaborates with leadership and staff to build trust within the general community, donor groups, and other audiences.


On a monthly basis, the DMC reports to leadership on key program metrics such as audience engagement, impressions, reach, referrals, and conversions, and they modify future campaigns based on this data.

Reports also include the impact of their work on key lifesaving metrics such as adoptions, fosters, and pet reunifications, and they modify future campaigns to increase HSSA?s lifesaving impact.

This is a primarily on-site position, with flexibility for off-site meetings with media and community partners.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Develop and execute the department?s annual plan.
  • Prepare and submit proposed department income and expenditure budget to CDO and CFO.
  • Oversee all marketing and communications outreach and department programs.
  • Manage all strategies and activities for a comprehensive marketing, communications, and public relations programs that will enhance the organization?s image and position HSSA within the marketplace and the animal welfare community.
  • Directly manage Marketing and Communications staff and consultants.
  • Responsible for creative and editorial direction, design, production and distribution of all organization communication channels and tactics, including the Humanely Speaking quarterly newsletter.
  • Act as the organization?s representative with the media.
  • Generate positive media interest in the organization, ensure regular contact with target media, and provide appropriate responses to media requests.
  • Develop cooperative, reciprocal relationships with other nonprofits, community leaders and local businesses.
  • Oversee the production of all organization print and electronic materials such as letterhead, brochures, etc.
  • Work with the C-Suite and other leadership to design, support, and implement donor campaigns and communications.
  • Lead projects as assigned, such as causerelated market research and special events.
  • Manage and adhere to department?s approved budget.
  • Maintain a climate that attracts, retains, and motivates top quality personnel. Make conscious effort to maintain departmental employee turnover rate within the national industry standards.
  • Ensures that Marketing and Communications staff abide by all safety policies and procedures.
  • Train and supervise volunteers for the Marketing and Communications Department.
  • Perform customer service to the standards set forth in HSSA?s employee manual.
  • Interface and cooperate with other HSSA departments to support HSSA marketing and communication goals.
  • Drive company vehicle in performance of company business when needed.
  • Maintain professional, ethical, and positive public appearance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
