Duties:

The following are the duties of this position at the GS-11.

If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.


As an ARCHIVES SPECIALIST, you will:

  • Coordinate, oversee, or provide public services to individuals, agencies, and organizations in order to provide access to NARA's holdings; Utilize NARA's Catalog, finding aids and related resources to respond to requests and provide access to NARA holdings for individuals, agencies, and organizations.
  • Carry out a wide range of actions required for processing archival records according to NARA policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Plan, oversee and/or carry out holding's maintenance actions needed to preserve NARA's holdings and make them available for use.
  • Participate in the review of records proposed for transfer to NARA.
  • Assist in the planning and coordination of partnership or internal digitization activities; Coordinate document preparation activities, monitor workflow processes, and monitor holdings security procedures.

Conditions of Employment:

The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.

  • A one year probationary period may be required.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation.
  • Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency.
  • If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so.
  • Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form i9. Federal law requires verification of the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires in the U.S.
  • Obtain and use a Governmentissued charge card for businessrelated travel.
  • Incumbent must be physically able to perform the duties of this position. Physical demands may include some ascending caster equipped ladders, maneuvering on catwalks and handling boxes of records stored up to 15 feet above the floor and typically weighing 50 pounds, occasionally more. The work may also demand considerable periods of maintaining a stationary position, moving, or otherwise positioning oneself to access objects, equipment, or records located in high and low places.

Qualifications:

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.


To be qualified for this position at the GS-09 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.

Specialized experience for this position must include:

  • Utilizing a wide range of systems or databases to search beyond readily accessible material to locate, analyze, index, and manage records;
    AND:
  • Performing record maintenance and preservation in adherence with archival principles, procedures and record keeping practices;
    AND:
  • Providing customer service and guidance with record research, reference and/or access services.

OR

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree;
OR 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related;

OR
-
Combination: You may qualify by a combination of experience and education.

  • The total percentage of experience at the required grade level compared to the requirement, as well as the percentage of completed education compared to the requirement must equal at least 100 percent. Only graduate level education in excess of the first 18 semester hours (27 quarter hours) may be combined to be considered for qualifying education.
