Description
SAGE is the country's largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBTQ+) older adults.
Founded in 1978 and headquartered in New York City, SAGE is a national organization that offers supportive services and consumer resources for LGBTQ+ older adults and their caregivers, advocates for public policy changes that address the needs of LGBTQ+ older people, and provides cultural competency training for aging providers and LGBTQ+ organizations.
The primary function of the Director of Special Programs is to oversee designated programs, including New York City Friendly Visitor Program, SAGEPositive, SAGEVets, the South Florida Friendly Visitor Program, and SAGE Miami Services for LGBTQ+ Elders.
The Director oversees program planning, administration and management, as well as the development of new programming to meet constituents' needs.
The Director supervises multiple staff, both in and outside of New York City.The position is also in charge of representing the agency and Special Programs at conferences and speaking events and to the press.
This position reports to and is supervised by the Senior Director of Supportive Services, and must work closely with the Director of Care Management, the Senior Director of Programs & Services, and the Executive Director of SAGEServes.
The individual holding the position of Director should have a working knowledge of aging and LGBTQ+ communities, as well as experience in program management and providing supervision to multiple staff.
They need to be able to interact with, relate to, and work with LGBTQ+ older adults, as well as other service providers and community partners.
They ideally should also have familiarity with the requirements of City or State Funding Agencies that support Care and Case Management or other not-for-profit caring initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide principal oversight of designated programs, including the New York City Friendly Visitor Program, SAGEPositive, SAGEVets, the South Florida Friendly Visitor Program, SAGE Miami Services for LGBTQ+ Elders, and any expansions of similar programs.
Work with the Development Department to submit proposals for new and renewing grant funding and to submit annual funder reports
Create and maintain program budgets
Ensure that staff within the department are correctly entering program notes into client databases and reporting deliverables
As necessary, travel to locations outside of New York City for special events as they relate to these programs
Represent the agency and Special Programs at conferences and speaking engagements and in the press
Participate in Director-level meetings
Work closely with the Director of Care Management to ensure collaboration as it pertains to referrals and protocols between the two departments
Work with SAGE's Senior Director of Supportive Services, Executive Director of SAGEServes, and with lobbyists to determine legislative agendas around older LGBTQ+ vets and those living with HIV.
Facilitate and/or implement social and support groups pertaining to the department, such as HIV long term survivor support groupRepresent the agency by sitting on various New York City planning committees
Work with the Executive Team to create models for additional programming, including work plans, budgets, and program deliverables
Required Skills/Qualifications:
MSW or relevant education/work experience required; LMSW and SIFI certification preferred;
A minimum of 2 years work experience working with aging and LGBTQ+ communities;
A minimum of 2 years of experience supervising staff;
Group facilitation skills and experience;
Strong interpersonal skills;
Ability to take initiative and work independently as well as part of a team;
Ability to make good utilization of supervision; and
Proficiency in PC skills, including database usage.
