Under general supervision of an Agricultural Pest Control Supervisor, the incumbent performs technical control and eradication activities for the daily operations of an entire county-wide detection project, including lead responsibility for the detection work force of seasonal employees, state and federal vehicle management, quality control inspections, and implementation of emergency detection/eradication projects or entire minor projects.
Provide leadership and direction to seasonal staff of an ongoing county detection program to ensure eradication projects are in compliance with Food and Agricultural Codes and departmental policies and procedures.
- Assist Supervisor with the planning and implementation of cooperative pest detection and emergency response activities, including prioritizing work assignments for office and field personnel.
- Assist Supervisor in the training of detection personnel in the techniques of insect pest detection; prepare reports and correspondence; perform quality control inspections; and maintain necessary records.
- Perform field surveys, treatments, and inspections of detection projects in order to efficiently and quickly eradicate infestation of serious agricultural pests and to prevent permanent establishment and subsequent spreading in California.
- Perform calibration of equipment for liquid and/or granular pesticides.
- Maintain and keep current daily records of pesticides usage on all projects.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with homeowners, growers, city, county, and federal officials.
Duty Statement.
Working Conditions
- The duties of this position are conducted indoors approximately 40% of the time. The work settings where the incumbent may be required to work vary. They may be offices, warehouses, shops, fields, and yards. Office settings are permanent dwellings leased or owned by the state, or cooperating agencies, and office trailers. Offices are furnished with a variety of office equipment, which normally consists of desks, tables, chairs, filing cabinets, storage cabinets, filing bins, computer, computer peripherals, phones, answering machines, and fax machines. Shops and warehouses may be equipped with all the tools, equipment, and machinery normally used at mechanics/maintenance shops.
- Employee may be exposed to pesticides, fumes, gases, and odors.
- The incumbent will be required to drive and must have a good driving record and a valid Class C California driver's license. If employee is not a California resident, but accepts a position with the Branch, or becomes a resident, the employee must obtain a California driver's license within 10 days of job appointment.
- The incumbent in this position must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during the course of work; work well under pressure; work independently and in cooperation with other staff members in completing assigned work and meeting required deadlines.
- Travel by state vehicle or other public transportation systems to various locations throughout the state may be required.
