  • Collects blood from patients by performing venipunctures or finger
- and heel-sticks for laboratory tests in accordance with established standards and practices/procedures, timely and effectively, as directed by the supervisor.

  • Demonstrates safe work practices. Follows strict principles of asepsis and antisepsis in performing duties. Assumes responsibility for safety and comfort of donor or patient prior to, during and after donation following established standards and practices.
  • Prepares equipment at the collection site to efficiently collect blood. Maintains proper working order of supplies and equipment. Alerts supervisor of defective or deficient supplies and equipment as needed. Requisitions supplies and equipment as directed by supervisor.
  • Observes established Medical System and Clinical Pathology department policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control; and, complies with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies, as directed by supervisor.
  • Maintains departmental records, reports, statistics, files and logs, as directed. Accessions, logs completed collection of specimens into clinical pathology's computer system, daily.
  • Assists supervisor with the orientation and training of volunteers, students and new phlebotomists by explaining and demonstrating phlebotomist duties and responsibilities, as requested by the supervisor.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
  • Completion of an accredited program in Phlebotomy is preferred. Certification as a registered Phlebotomist by a nationally recognized Phlebotomy Society such as, the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians, is preferred.
  • Minimum of one year general work experience is preferred. Experience in a health care environment is preferred.
