    Pittsburgh Public Schools employs over 4,000 individuals in various capacities to support the academic achievement and strength of character of the 20,000 students we serve.

    Day-to-Day Substitute Nurses are responsible for protecting and promoting the health of every student enrolled in Pittsburgh Public Schools.

    Substitute Nurses work 8 hours per day; including a 1-hour lunch and are assigned to absences by the Pittsburgh Public Schools' Health Services Department in accordance with the substitute nurses' availability.

    We are looking for day-to-day substitutes who are available to instruct and provide support in our schools any day of the week.

    We are seeking candidates with:

    Substitute School Nurse:

    • Registered Nurse License

    Substitute Nurse Practitioner:

    • Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner License
    • Ability to work collaboratively as a team player, under pressure with multiple competing deadlines, and with culturally, educationally, and racially diverse internal and external customers.
    • Ability to build, foster, and maintain strong relationships with school staff.
    • Ability to exercise a high degree of confidentiality, professionalism, poise, tact and diplomacy to accomplish objectives.
    • A capacity to solve problems, to stay organized and manage multiple priorities.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

    Essential Job Functions
    1. Follow the plan(s) or assignment left and ensures students complete all assigned tasks.

    • Maintain a safe environment.
    • Use materials provided by the absent employee or other school personnel.
    • Notify school administration of any unusual incidents which have occurred during the school day.
    • Leave information concerning the day's activities for the absent employee.
    • Communicate effectively with students and staff.
    • Manage student behavior in a positive manner.
    • Teaches wellness and health maintenance.
    • Refers to school and community resources by assessing and arranging appropriate management and referrals for children with health problems who require further evaluation.
    • Prevents and/or controls communicable diseases.
    • Manages illness and medical emergencies.
    • Provide nursing servies to meet the special needs of the students.
    • Manages the school environment by identifying and reporting health and safety hazards and modifying student's school environment to accommodate handicaps or special needs.
    • Performs record keeping and clerical functions such as maintaining a comprehensive health record on each student, schedule students for mandated services, reports all services rendered, send formsand notices to parents, record results of exams, tests, health room visits, emergencies on student records, reports student immunization information to the state health department, sends and receives referrals and order supplies.
    • Other relevant duties as assigned by supervisor in support of the school goals and objectives and the District's mission and Superintendent's Priority Goals.
